Internet benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published their “definitive” 2024 Fixed Broadband Experience report, which gauges the performance of various internet service providers across the UK and then separately across 12 of its regions (inc. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Overall, Virgin Media came top in the national scores, but the regional results are different.

Rochdale-base broadband ISP Zen Internet has today signed yet another wholesale deal with an alternative full fibre network, which this time will enable them to sell faster internet packages to homes and businesses by harnessing Freedom Fibre‘s 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the North West and West Midlands.

Some customers of UK broadband ISP Zen Internet have complained about repeated service disconnections after their bundled FRITZ!box 7530 routers from AVM received a firmware update to the latest FRITZ!OS v8 software, which appears to have introduced an unexpected instability into the device.

The Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of UK broadband operator Openreach (BT), Katie Milligan, has told Richard Tang, the CEO of ISP Zen Internet, in a new interview that there are “no plans” for a third phase of “Equinox” price discounts on FTTP broadband services “at the moment“. The operator also touches on the possibility of faster speeds, like 3Gbps, among other things.

The UK Government’s Minister for Telecoms, Sir Chris Bryant, has written a new letter to the bosses of major broadband ISPs that calls on them to help protect vulnerable users during the switchover from analogue (PSTN) to digital (IP) phone solutions by refraining from re-starting non-voluntary migrations and offering battery backup that can last “up to” 8 hours.

The newly appointed CEO, Tom Rigg, of rural focused full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP B4RN has told Richard Tang, the boss of Zen Internet, in a new interview that their network now passes 27,000 premises in rural areas and is home to almost 14,000 customers. But they have no plans to “split everything off and then try and go wholesale” with the network.

Rochdale-base broadband ISP Zen Internet today claims to have beaten BT (EE) to become the “first major provider” to launch a WiFi 7 (802.11be) capable router for customers on their full fibre (FTTP) packages, which reflects the outcome of their partnership with Amazon. The provider also confirmed that their first “up to” 2Gbps plans will launch this autumn.

Rochdale-base broadband ISP Zen Internet has today become the first national provider to sign a wholesale deal that will enable them to sell services to premises covered by alternative operator Trooli, which has deployed a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 370,000 homes and businesses across parts of England and Scotland.

Benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published a complementary study to their recent research into the differences in broadband reliability across countries (here), which reveals the ISPs that deliver the strongest and poorest “broadband reliability experience” in the UK. Suffice to say that it’s a good day for Virgin Media and altnets.

The CEO of Oxfordshire-based alternative broadband provider Zzoomm, Matthew Hare, has revealed that they’re still aspiring to cover 1 million UK premises with their 2Gbps FTTP network (despite the recent move to stop new building work), but “if we can’t build it ourselves then … you have to buy it” (growing through consolidation).

Today we’re taking our usual biannual look back to see how the average UK broadband download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs, mobile operators and Starlink (satellite) since the end of 2023. Overall, broadband speeds have continued to improve, albeit not without some surprises.

UK ISP Zen Internet today says they’ve become the first broadband wholesaler to offer the latest 1.2Gbps and 1.8Gbps download speed capable packages (uploads of 120Mbps) over Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. But the announcement doesn’t say precisely when Zen’s own retail customers will be able to order it.

A ruling by the Employment Tribunal has found that Rochdale-based UK broadband ISP Zen Internet acted “unfairly” when they dismissed former CEO, Paul Stobart, in March 2023. The move was followed by Zen’s original CEO and Founder, Richard Tang, being re-appointed as CEO after stepping aside in 2018.

Consumer magazine Which? have announced that UK broadband ISP Zen Internet has been crowned the winner of their new ‘Customer Service Brand of the Year Award’ for 2024, while mobile network operator SMARTY picked up the award for ‘Utilities Brand of the Year’.

Some of Zen Internet’s broadband ISP customers are this afternoon being affected by a “NATIONWIDE OUTAGE“, which appears to have started at around 11:30am today and is currently still ongoing. BT also saw a small increase in complaints at around the same time, but Zen appears to be suffering from the biggest impact.
