Several credible sources have informed ISPreview that BT, most likely via EE – their soon-to-be “flagship brand for consumers“, have set themselves a target of being the first UK broadband ISP to market with a WiFi 7 (802.11be) capable router (SmartHub 4). The hope is to be ready by early 2024, but June 2024 is also mentioned.

Rural broadband ISP Airband, which is deploying a mix of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks across various parts of the UK, has announced the appointment of Ian Fishwick as both their new Chairman of the Board and a Non-Executive Director.

Mobile network analysts at Streetwave have published the results of a new survey, which examined the mobile signal quality on the London (England) to Edinburgh (Scotland) train route. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the route was found to suffer from various “not-spots“, while EE’s network performed the best for mobile broadband.

UK ISP BT has published their latest biannual (April 2023) update on the progress they’ve made in delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which reveals that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 7,000 premises (up from 5,900 in Oct 2022), with 800 further builds in progress (down from 2,000).

Some operators of Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband ISP networks in the UK have expressed concern to ISPreview after Ofcom appeared to toughen their stance on the compliance of related hardware with their rules. Some providers fear this could effectively ban their kit, reduce choice in the market and push up costs.

A new survey of 2,000 UK adults, which was conducted by broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2), has found that respondents would rather give up booze (33%) and the gym (36%) than be without WiFi, with 98% stating they rely on broadband every day and 47% saying it’s vital they have a connection for the entire day.

Customers of Virgin Media and O2, specifically those who enjoy connecting to their public WiFi service on the London Underground, have been left confused after the operator suddenly closed the service on 31st March 2023. The move is not quite what many were expecting to occur.

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has today announced that they’ve “reintroduced” a WiFi service for their customers travelling on the London Underground, which comes after they scrapped their original service (here) – supplied via a wholesale network run by Virgin Media – back in 2021.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP WeLink Communications UK, which has a network that can offer wireless broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps to homes and businesses, has announced that their deployment in the city of Edinburgh (Scotland) is expanding their carrier-grade coverage to 27,500 premises.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today begun fielding industry views on how it could improve Shared Spectrum Licences, which enable small businesses to create their own local wireless broadband and mobile networks across various radio spectrum bands (many of these could previously only be used by national operators).

A spinout from a team at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, called WhiteHaul, has secured £275k from Scottish Enterprise (SE) to develop a novel spectrum aggregation technology that claims to enable “high speed long-distance” backhaul links that “cannot currently be commercially achieved by existing fibre or wireless technologies.”

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that they will release a large chunk of millimetre wave (mmWave) radio spectrum frequency across the 26GHz and 40GHz bands for use by ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) technology, which could potentially make multi-gigabit mobile data speeds a reality.

Blackburn-based network operator IX Wireless, which is building a new gigabit-capable wireless broadband network for UK ISP 6G Internet (NOT related to 6G mobile), has faced criticism after over a hundred residents in part of Bolton came out to protest against their installation of another 15 metre high metal pole (mast).
