Broadband ISP and telecoms giant BT Group has today announced that they intend to hire a further 700+ UK apprentices and graduates as part of their September 2020 intake plan, which is down from the 900 that have been added over the past 12 months.

As usual the operator intends to offer a range of apprenticeships and those will develop into the cyber security experts, software developers, data analysts and network engineers (excluding Openreach – those are now separate) of the future. Many such recruits often go on to take a full time job with the operator.

On top of that BT said they were investing in several related initiatives, which include BT’s Work Ready programme (gives young people aged 16-24 who are not in education, employment or training, on-the-job experience, and tech literacy) and Barefoot (aims to give 5 million children the skills to thrive in the digital world by 2025, through a mixture of workshops and school teacher training).

Alison Wilcox, BT Group HR Director, said:

“BT is at the heart of the UK’s digital economy and as a leading employer of apprentices and graduates we offer unparalleled development opportunities. Our business attracts people from all walks of life, and we value the diverse perspectives they bring. We look forward to welcoming the 2020 newcomers.”

Naturally the Secretary of State for Education, Gavin Williamson CBE MP, called the move a “brilliant achievement and I applaud the BT Group for their continued support and investment in apprenticeships.”
