Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has today confirmed that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (inc. TV services) is now available to 6,000 extra homes in Barmulloch and Cardonald near Glasgow, which is on top of the additional 220,000 premises that have been reached in Scotland since 2016.
As usual this effort forms part of the operator’s £3bn Project Lightning build, which originally aimed to add an additional 4 million premises to their UK coverage (so far they’ve done c.2.2 million) using a mix of FTTP via Radio Frequency Over Glass (RFoG) and Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) technology. Both methods make use of the DOCSIS standard so as to harness the same consumer hardware.
The latest coverage will no doubt help VM toward reaching their original network expansion target for Scotland of 360,000 premises (here). Locals in the newly covered areas can already access a top (average peak time) download speed of over 516Mbps via this new “full fibre” network, although by the end of 2021 they should be able to benefit from the new DOCSIS 3.1 upgrade that will make speeds of 1Gbps+ possible (here).

Colin Brown, VM’s Regional Director for Scotland, said:
“It is fantastic news for residents in Barmulloch and Cardonald that we have finished our expansion and they can now access our ultrafast broadband and entertainment services.”
The operator currently covers well over 1 million premises in Scotland.
They are working on a massive rollout across West Lothian area in Scotland.

Is it possible to find out what has happened to the expansion in the Newton area in Cambuslang ? About half of the estate here has had Virgin installed just before the lockdown and there were plans on roadworks Scotland for the rest of the streets in the estate at the same time but it has all disappeared since then with no sign of returning.
I wouldn’t recommend virgin media to anyone as been waiting for over 3 months for them to put in new cables in South London and still no end in sight. Yesterday another date of long list of deadlines missed.
Have complained to ombudsmen and still waiting to hear.
Virgin mobile on the other hand am happy but Media I.e. broadband totally unacceptable level of service and response.
