Virgin Media has reported that new registrations to its public WiFi hotspot service at 137 London Underground Tube stations were up by 50% yesterday as commuters navigated their way around the capital during the strike.
According to Virgin, Internet traffic on their WiFi network normally peaks at around 8.35am but during the strike this changed to 8:50am as limited Tube services forced passengers to hunt for travel updates or to keep work colleagues and friends updated via emails, Tweets and Facebook posts.
The WiFi service offers free access to TfL travel information and local news but for proper Internet surfing you need to pay £2 a day, £5 per week or £15 for a monthly pass. However access is free to existing customers of EE, O2, Vodafone and of course Virgin Media.
