New Strategy Analytics research has revealed that the UK and South Korea dominate the world for home wi-fi network penetration. Some 80.3% of households in SK have wifi networks, which falls to 73.3% for the UK. Overall 25% (439 Million) of households worldwide now have a home wifi network and adoption continues to climb.
The report estimates that the total worldwide number of wifi households will reach nearly 800 million in 2016 (42%). As usual China, which currently only has a household penetration of 25%, is expected to become the main driver of global home wifi market growth over the next five years (i.e. 110 million Wi-Fi households by 2016 or 31% of the global total!).
Jia Wu, Senior Analyst, said:
“Developed broadband markets are currently the leading countries in terms of Wi-Fi household penetration. However, because of its population size, China already has the highest number of Wi-Fi households in the world, followed by USA and Japan.”
At least part of the reason why home wifi is so dominant in the UK is because all of the big broadband ISPs typically supply wireless routers alongside their internet access packages and many enable wifi by default.
