Cable operator Virgin Media has moved to “support the government’s ambitions for the country” by announcing the creation of 400 new jobs across the United Kingdom. Overall they will add 90 new engineers, 80 customer care assistants and 230 customer service and technical support staff.
The news follows hot on the heels of Virgin Media’s surprise £15bn takeover by international cable giant Liberty Global (LGi) earlier this month (here), which also saw VM increase the size of their superfast broadband subscriber base by +51,600 during Q4-2012 to total an impressive 4,465,000 customers.

By comparison VM created a total of 620 jobs last year and recently announced that a record number of apprentices (250) would soon be employed at the operator to work as engineers. In January 2013 VM also touted 60 new customer contact jobs for Glasgow.
Paul Buttery, VM’s Customer and Networks Chief, said (BBC):
“With this expansion Virgin Media will be even better able to support the government’s ambitions for the country. We’re investing in the very communities we serve to ensure all our customers get the experience they expect from us as we power Britain’s digital heartbeat.”
Apparently 230 of the new staff will be employed at the ISPs existing facility in Swansea, while the rest will find jobs in Wythenshawe, Manchester and Birmingham. Part of the reason given for the creation of so many new jobs is also to help meet growing demand for Virgin’s broadband, tv and phone services. It probably wouldn’t hurt to have some extra engineers on hand for future network upgrades too.
