Business ISP Surf Telecoms has teamed up once again with GEO Networks, a dedicated fibre optic solutions provider, to expand the reach of its existing fibre optic network and to provide communication services to its parent company Western Power Distribution in England.
GEO signed its first five-year deal with the wholesale fibre carrier at the end of 2011 (here), which allowed the ISP to expand its fibre optic route between Bristol and Tewkesbury through new interconnections. The move also gave a boost to JANET, which is one of the UK’s leading education networks and a major Surf Telecoms customer.

Today Surf Telecoms network, which is home to around 70,000km of ITU-T G652 fibre optic cable, extends from above Cardiff in South Wales and down into the UK’s South West peninsula. The new extension will work to connect these two existing networks to the newly acquired Midlands region, which should bring management of the entire infrastructure “in-house” (a crucial element in fulfilling Western Power’s business strategy).
Richard Slane at Surf Telecoms said:
“By expanding our network through Geo, Surf is able to offer a more integrated solution to both internal and external stakeholders. We now have a network in place that provides Surf with a fantastic platform to meet the growing data demands of both new and existing customers.”
GEO’s 270km fibre optic network will thus connect Surf’s South-West network in Tewkesbury to some of the key locations in the Midlands including Worcester, Tipton, Hinckley, Leicester and Nottingham. It’s also noted that GEO’s dark fibre tracks the national gas pipeline.
