Virgin Media UK in Growth Surge to Top 4.625 Million Broadband Users

Friday, Feb 13th, 2015 (9:26 am) - Score 1,935

Aside from today’s big network expansion news (here), Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has also announced its Q4-2014 results and confirmed that they added an impressive +64,000 broadband subscribers last quarter to total 4,625,800 (this compares with +37,600 added in Q3-2014 and a dismal -12,000 in Q2).

As usual the above total reflects 4,536,600 cable broadband (EuroDOCSIS / DOCSIS3) subscribers, which increased by +58,700 net additions in the quarter. The figure for cable is lower than the main total because it excludes 89,200 off-net ADSL (Virgin National /Virgin.net) subscribers, which have declined by -8,500 during Q4 (better than the -11k in Q3).

It’s important to remind readers that Virgin Media has recently agreed the sale of their non-cable Internet subscribers to TalkTalk and they currently expect the migration of these users to be completed by April 2015 (here). Mind you many of the affected customers aren’t exactly happy with how they’ve been treated.

Elsewhere Virgin said their Two-Way Homes Passed figure had increased from 12,522,700 in Q3 to 12,598,400 now (i.e. homes on those sections of Virgin’s network that are technologically capable of providing two-way services, including video, internet and telephony), which is largely due to their recent smaller scale network expansion. But take note that this figure is based on census data that can also change through either revision to the data or from new census results.

Virgin also claims to have seen “particularly strong demand” for their 100-152Mbps ultrafast broadband packages, which have grown to account for 1.3 million of the total (28% of the Internet subscriber base). Meanwhile a little over half of their subscribers take the entry-level 50Mbps option.

On the financial front, Virgin’s monthly Average Revenue Per Customer Relationship increased slightly to £49.36, which is up from £48.98 in Q3, and their quarterly revenue from Internet services stood at £267.7m (up from £259.8m in Q3), with total revenue of £1,069.2m (up from £1,046.8m in Q3).

It’s also worth noting that Virgin’s total net third-party debt currently stands at £8,647.7m, which is up from £8,431.4m in Q3. Net third-party debt is defined as total third-party debt including capital lease obligations less cash and cash equivalents.
