Some 5,000 extra homes and businesses in the Norfolk seaside town of Great Yarmouth are next on the list for Virgin Media’s £3bn network expansion (Project Lightning), which aims to roll-out cable TV and broadband speeds of up to 350Mbps (300Mbps for residential customers) to the area.
The announcement was actually made at the start of last week, although it somewhat slipped under my radar due to being on a short holiday. Apparently the roll-out phase has just started and the whole deployment will aim to complete before the end of 2019.
Maurice Daw, Regional Director at Virgin Media, said:
“By expanding our network to thousands more homes and businesses we are making Great Yarmouth a digital hotspot, and time-strapped families will soon be benefitting from the reliability of a service that’s 15 times faster than the local average. We urge more people to come together and register their interest – your street could be next.”
Virgin Media currently aims to reach 17 million premises in the United Kingdom by 2019 (i.e. an extra 4 million premises via Project Lighting – half of which will be delivered via “full fibre” FTTP lines), which will boost their coverage of the United Kingdom to around 60-65%.
