New Mobile Operator Zevvle Has a Different Twist on PAYG Data

A new Birmingham-based Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) called Zevvle has launched with a different twist on pay-as-you-go data (mobile broadband) pricing, which is intended to help prevent customers from overpaying for data they don’t use by discounting the price as you consume an increasing amount.

The new MVNO is based off EE’s (BT) national UK network and seems to be aimed more at light users, while those who make heavy use of mobile broadband connectivity will probably find the “unlimited” plans of other operators to be more viable from a cost perspective.

Zevvle offers two types of SIM plan, both of which include their tiered data pricing (we’ll get to that in a moment). Otherwise the main difference is that one is closer to being a more traditional “PAYG” plan that costs from £2 per month (i.e. you’re charged 2p per minute for calls and 3p per text), while the other – oddly called “Limitless” – gives you unlimited calls and texts from £5 per month.

As for the tiered data pricing, the idea is that the first 1GB of data you consume will, for example, cost £5 (on top of the plan’s cost), but this reduces to £2 for 2GB and then £1 per GB thereafter. However the fact that you have to pay £2 per month for the PAYG plan means that it isn’t really a true PAYG plan at all.

In practice this means that if you only consumed 2GB of data, but made no calls and texts, then you’d pay £9 on the PAYG plan and £12 on Limitless. The problem is that there are some pretty cheap Pay Monthly contracts out there, such as ID Mobile’s £6 plan that gives you unlimited texts, 500 minutes and 2GB of data for £6 per month. But there are other considerations too.

Nick Goodall, co-founder and CEO, said:

“Zevvle customers enjoy lower rates and credit that never expires without worrying about wasting data or rapacious out-of-bundle charges.

There’s a tension with mis-aligned incentives. Consumers want a fair deal from a network they can trust, and operators want to sell more data that isn’t used. And it’s consumers that lose out, as evidenced by the report from Citizen’s Advice — 12 million SIM-only customers each waste £63 per year on average.”

Zevvle’s service also comes with an app that enables you to manage multiple SIMS from a single account (you can even share an account balance) and to track your data usage in near-realtime.

Well they are using EE so Kudos for using a good network but my current usage of 490GB on Virgin would put me into debt wit them – so as you say – if you want Unlimited look elsewhere.

And here was me thinking EE at £34 was expensive for Unlimited! – Zavvle could cost several hundred for that!

Stupid network – trying to be like Smarty but got it wrong?

    1. Avatar photo alison says:

      Or to sum it up..

Use it to it’s full potential and you can use the full 50GB a month and unlimited calls and SMS – for £60! Compare than to other operators = is there a market for such a giffgaff/Smarty network?

Yes they offer free calls between them – any sim with unlimited mins rules that out – same for SMS – what many people forget is things like Voxi – where video calls AND MMS are included within the allowance – as well as the unlimited stuff – which is half the price of this new MVNO – if VF is good for them of course.

Not sure they have through this through. Even 2GB with Unlimited Data is twice the price of Smarty with no discount

      Hi Alison!

Thank you for the comments; you’re absolutely right — we’re not the network if you need unlimited data, or even use 5-10 GBs regularly. As Mark said it’s for lighter users or people who need several devices, whether for children, extra phones, tablets, cars, etc.

If I can help with anything at all, feel free to email me — nick@zevvle.com.

      Thanks again,

      Nick

I like the thinking Nick! But alas what do you do that other networks don’t? You can get as many cheap sims as you like on EE and share allowance for example. Many other networks are the same as if not cheaper than your £5 offering. Your £2 offering is unique (to me anyway) I will admit that

Nothing new out the box here unfortunately!

What the point of this? It’s work out more expensive. 2GB data, unlimited calls (500 minutes) and unlimited texts (500 texts) cost £12 per month from this site https://zevvle.com/pricing/ are seem misleading adverts with the wording Unlimited!
    No chance for me.

    1. Avatar photo Nick Goodall says:

Sorry about the confusion — unlimited does mean unlimited for calls/texts (the slider only went up to 500). I’ve just updated the site to make that clearer.

      Thanks for pointing it out,

      Nick

I like the idea of their pricing (even tho I use too much data for this to personally be worth my while).

The idea that the more you use, the lower your effective per-unit cost, is well established. Think about multipack offers in supermarkets, electricity (thanks to the standing charge), or wholesale vs retail purchases.

Most mobile phone companies penalise you for going over your bundle allowance, charging you excessive out-of-bundle rates. That is the opposite of how it should be, because the phone company’s fixed costs have already been paid for.

This telco’s pricing makes sense: the more you use, the lower the rate.

    1. Avatar photo alison says:

      But.

How can that be the case when the max you can use it 50GB a month and that’s going to cost you £60? does not seem like it’s lowering to me?

    2. Avatar photo Shaun McDonald says:

One of the main advantages of the Zevvle pricing is when you have variable usage. With most bundles or pay monthly operators you have to plan in advance what your maximum usage will be for the term of the contract, then most of the contract you could have been on a lower/cheaper tariff. There are often special offers available that can be particularly cheap, however I’d rather have reasonable standard pricing and not need to worry about changing operator to get the cheapest price at the end of each contract or having to keep moving up and down the tariffs as I predict my future usage. Having compared the pricing of Zevvle, there are some cheaper, and some more expensive. If you lock into a longer contract you are more likely to find cheaper tariffs.

The billing is per second and per byte with no connection charges, thus can work out cheaper compared to some other providers that have various minimums.

Zevvle possibly aren’t for you if you regularly use over 15GB of data per sim, as there are many cheaper deals once you get on to that level of data usage. There’ll still be a significant portion of the market who come into the lower end of the usage. Hopefully Zevvle will introduce further tiers where it gets cheaper as your usage goes up, thus making higher usage more reasonably priced on Zevvle.

Still can’t beat my Plusnet sim only with no contract (ee network) with unlimited texts, unlimited calls and 12GB data for just £10 a month

    1. Avatar photo alison says:

No it seems not even they can beat the fictious deal you don’t have with them – why are you so special? why does no other customer get it?

Go back to sniffing glue man

    2. Avatar photo Declan McGuinness says:

Doubt it am on Plusnet mobile and I get 3000 mins, 3000 texts and 4GB for £8.40 a month on a 30 day rolling contract.

  5. Avatar photo adslmax says:

Plusnet MVNO EE Unlimited Texts, Unlimited Calls, 12GB Data, no contract £10 a month
Zevvle MVNO EE Unlimited Texts, Unlimited Calls, 12GB Data, no contract £22 a month

I better off stay with Plusnet, best bargain.

    1. Avatar photo alison says:

But hang on – they pay you apparently as you are such a massive refer – so you get it free? which means you can’t really compare it as a bargain can you…

Just going on what you say man!

Contract or not – even VM’s 120Gb for £23 is better than this!

    2. Avatar photo alison says:

and £25 fora 50GB is £35 a month less – is such a high cost worth it for no contract? if so Voxi do unlimited for £30 with 5G (same as Three) on PAYG basically

  6. Avatar photo adslmax says:

Hand on. I am not paying £23 for 120GB – what the point of this? I only average 9-11GB per month on mobile data as 12GB fit me fine. Plusnet £10 a month is nothing to with do with broadband referral scheme or extra GB as a broadband customer. It’s a special deal sim only plan with limit time offer which I did grab it. My daughter got better deal with Plusnet 40GB data with unlimited texts and unlimited calls for just £15 a month with no contract as she always get closer to average 35-38GB per month.

    1. Avatar photo alison says:

Mate, I’ve worked at Plusnet for 23 years. I’ve never seen us do the deal your Daughter has apparently got – not even in a special! (and trust me I asked Tommo just to make sure)

      Again please stop talking nonsense.

    2. Avatar photo dave says:

I’ve been told by several BT advisors “I’ve never seen a deal like yours and I’ve worked here for x years”.

Unless you’ve scoured the customer database in full (which is presumably fairly large), you wouldn’t know.

    3. Avatar photo adslmax says:

alison – the plusnet deal was discreetly! You know nothing! I can you show proof if I can from plusnet app to say 12GB unlimited texts, unlimited calls for £10.00 and other one is 40GB data unlimited texts, unlimited calls for £15 for my daughter.

  7. Avatar photo Name says:

Well, for 500MB + unlimited minutes & texts £7.5/mo. £1.5 more than in GiffGaff.

    1. Avatar photo Daver says:

Or, in my case zero calls/texts + 500MB £4.50/mo. £1.5 less than Giffgaff. VOIP – minutes & SMS are so yesterday.

  8. Avatar photo Arthur says:

I had plusnet 10Gig unlimited minutes and Tex £10pm 30 day contract
