Mobile network operator EE (BT) has announced that they will launch a new range of Pay As You Go (PAYG) mobile packs tomorrow, which will start from just £5 (currently £10) and give you more calling minutes and a bigger 4G data allowance (mobile broadband) than the standard packs.
In addition, PAYG customers on a £10 Pack or higher will now automatically earn a free 500MB data boost every two months on their second pack purchase for a full year, with existing customers able to retain an already earned boost. EE is also offering a 10% discount to customers who choose direct card payment.
PAYG customers will also still benefit from EE’s Data Rollover feature for unused data (i.e. it gets rolled over into the next pack you buy) and any customer who refers a friend to join EE on a £10 Pack or higher will receive a £10 Amazon.co.uk gift card. Otherwise, the new packs are listed below, and we assume they will all still follow the same 30-day expiry period as existed before.
Pack | Data | Mins | Texts |
£5 | 250MB | 250 | 500 |
£10 | 5GB | 500 | Unlimited |
£15 | 15GB | Unlimited | Unlimited |
£20 | 30GB | Unlimited | Unlimited |
£30 | 100GB | Unlimited | Unlimited |
One catch here is that EE’s existing PAYG Summer Special Offer means that you can currently get more data on some of their existing plans (e.g. the £10 pack gives you 8GB vs the usual 4GB and the £20 pack gives you 50GB instead of the usual 15GB). Of course, none of these are what we’d consider to be true PAYG plans (i.e. pay only for what you use), which have become increasingly hard to find in today’s market. The lack of 5G support is also disappointing.
250MB of data will be done in a day
innit
i use that much in like an hour
More like 1 speedtest.
Its almost like its some sort of entry level package and not aimed at data heavy users..
It’s laughable, Go to uSwitch and you’ll find better deals for £5
Is there a limit to how much data you can rollover?
PAYG packs currently start at £1 and will still be available, the minimum isn’t £5/10
EE feeling the pressure from cheaper and better value MVNO’s. Quite sad to see no 5G and that data allowance still isn’t good enough for the price. Compared to the competition.
Pointless without 5G. EE are pure greed!
Agreed ee are crap with there smug Kevin bacon crap adverts
True PAYG (or faux PAYG in this case) offers poor value to all but the most lightest of users today.
There are low cost, rolling 30 day SIM only ‘contract’ deals available, that do not require credit checks or even direct debits, which are of far greater value for money.
There’s credit checks alright, Everytime I’ve had a sim only deal even 30 day ones, EE,Vodafone and Three have done so, I think it’s a waste of resources and pointless although I guess they do have to prevent fraud occurring. But then again, they could operate a deposit scheme instead.
If you’re talking about Smarty or Voxi then no as these are classed as prepay/Pay ad you go.
Imo of it has a limit of 30 days, it’s not really PAYG…
As a PAYG low OAP user, I’d like to have a 4G PAYG sim that rolled over any unused credit in to the next month. Most of the 4G mainstream providers seem to have operate minimum credit purchase amounts larger than £ 5 and then write-off or claw-back any unused credit at the end of each month.
My 10 year old PAYG 3G SIM allows roll-over.But that phone surprisingly isn’t capable now of supporting current mainstream internet apps, and who knows, when on a whim the 3G signal will be pulled.
So, I imagine a lot of low-use PAYG customers will be like me i.e. both trying to make the technology transition from 3 to 4 to 5G, whilst keeping costs down, and this means, at certain times running 2-3 phones simultaneously. This has recently costed me more than the £30-40 per year I used to spend when my 3G phone was fully functional.
What might be useful is an account that can support 2-3 SIMS on say a £10 every 2 months basis with the ability to vire credit between them.
Nick it might be worth you checking out 1P mobile as it runs on the EE network, 1p minute, text or mb and the credit rolls over and can do for up to 1 year.
Full access to the EE network including 5G, wifi calling and 4G calling, and full access to their network speeds with no restrictions.
Even better value is rwg, runs on ee, £0 a month bundle,50 mins or texts and 250mb data free. Renews on the 25th of the month. Been using for 2 months now. No problems at all
With a 10% discount for customers who opt for recurring card payments, plus a data boost of up to 3GB a year, it’s actually not a bad alternative for customers. Once you have recurring card payments set up, it behaves like a 30 day SIM only contract deal.
Given EE’s SIM only contract deals seem to be all at least 24 months now and you need to spend at least £20 to get a decent data allowance, the pre-paid alternative of £9 for 5GB rising to 8GB or £13.50 for 15GB rising to 18GB, without an above inflation-rise built in does seem a good alternative, if you really want to stay with EE.
What about the £1 pack that was available but not well advertised?
It was £1 per week and gave 100 minutes a week,50mb data and a certain amount of texts.
I put an elderly relative on this as it works perfectly for their use, I hope it’s not going to be taken away. They use around 80 of those minutes a week at most and means they can top up £5 every 5 weeks.
EE don’t know the meaning of the term Pay as you go, it’s not really pay as you go if your almost forced to use packs that you might not need. If you don’t have a pack then it’s a whopping 35p per minute call UK landlines and mobiles and even voicemail.
I think it’s time to get their phone unlocked and move to another service, possibly 1p mobile.
