ISP Virgin Media UK Further Discounts Broadband and Phone

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has this morning sweetened the existing discounts on their ultrafast broadband and phone bundles, which knocks a few extra pounds off the previous offer. Packages now start at just £25 per month for a speed of 108Mbps (10Mbps upload) with free setup (usually £35) and included weekend calls.

New customers can expect to receive an included wireless router, 18-month minimum contract term, unlimited usage, access to Virgin’s UK network of WiFi hotspots, internet security / parental controls and email. Sadly, the latest discounts do not extend to the operator’s top gigabit speed package(s).

NOTE: VMO2’s fixed line network currently covers 15.6 million UK premises, mostly in urban areas, via a mix of Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP RFoG) technology.

The discounts, which look like they may only last for three days, also extend to Virgin Media’s VOLT bundles with O2’s mobile plans (we’re only going to list the broadband and phone options below). Just watch out for those hefty post-contract prices.

108Mbps (10Mbps) Fibre Broadband & Phone
PRICE: £25 per month for 18 months (£51 thereafter)

213Mbps (20Mbps) Fibre Broadband & Phone
PRICE: £31 per month for 18 months (£57 thereafter)

362Mbps (36Mbps) Fibre Broadband & Phone
PRICE: £37 per month for 18 months (£63 thereafter)

516Mbps (36Mbps) Fibre Broadband & Phone
PRICE: £43 per month for 18 months (£69 thereafter)

1130Mbps (52Mbps) Fibre Broadband & Phone
PRICE: £64 per month for 18 months

Really annoying that they put up prices by such a massive percentage citing “increased costs” then offer discounts to new customers. It comes off as them just making existing customers pay for new ones.

You’d have to be mad to trust them anyway. Even if they gave you a half price offer, like every other provider, their next price increase of 12% or whatever, will apply to the base price and not the discount, meaning if you’re on a half price offer your price goes up 24%, yay.

    1. Avatar photo John says:

A price increase of 12% would apply to your current discounted price.
Everyone’s bill goes up by the same percentage.

If I’m on a half price deal for 18 months and the price increases by 12% then my current price would increase by 12% not 24%

The only people who would see a % increase on the base out of contract price would be someone who is out of contract.

    2. Avatar photo Rich says:

@John that’s not how they do it.

If the normal price is £60, and the offer price £40, they actually give you a £20/m discount.

Then when the price goes up 10%, the £60 becomes £66, and you end up paying £46, which is a 15% increase rather than 10%.

    3. Avatar photo John says:

Perhaps they do new customers different from retentions? My bill doesn’t show like that it simply has my 18 month promotional/introductory price.

It is going up from £29.99 to £33.49 which roughly matches their quoted % rise for my current bill.
If it had gone up by the out of contract price it would be more of an increase.

Currently the only alternative to VM where I live is grotty old FTTC. However Cityfibre is cabling up streets near me so I live in hope.

    1. Avatar photo Dave says:

CityFibre have been building in my area for nearly 2 years and still no sign of it going live – I’ve had FTTC before Virgin, it was fine at first but gradually got slower to the point where it was unusable.

I’ve had to bite the bullet and sign up with Virgin for another 18 months on 1 gig…hopefully in that time either Virgin will have upgraded to proper gigabit (upload and download) or CityFibre will have gone live.

Have you got 5g In your area if you have get a 5g router outright on Amazon £400 to £500 unlocked and get a sim only unlimited contract screw virgin media rip you off .

  3. Avatar photo Bent says:

Yes we know you have a chip on your shoulder about VMO2, do you really need to spam every article mentioning them about it?

No you don’t so go troll elsewhere!!!!!

    2. Avatar photo John says:

I agree, but when there’s no alternative, you’re kind of screwed, but just hang in there. The fellow above is a virgin employee hence the nerve or soft spot you’ve hit, otherwise why bother with an unhelpful response, just leave and not comment on someone else who had a real bad time with virgin and expressing it.

No you don’t so go troll elsewhere!!!!!

You must be either a virgin media employee or a virgin media shill to defend there scummy business practices and model ripping off customers of virgin media for instance 500 mpbs and there gig1 service £62 a month you having a laugh I’m paying there rip off prices compared to three 5g home broadband for £21 atm on there website

I really wish the uk 5g network is like USA mmWave 4 or 5g gigabit download speed soon send virgin media in dust as they still rip you off in 10 years time vmo2 screw your liberty global and virgin media 02 you will get a penny off me again greedy bunch of scumbags .

  4. Avatar photo Kev says:

I left Virgin and no matter what deals they offer, I would never go back to them. They keep sending me junkmail saying theyd love to see me back etc lol I just write ‘return to sender’ on the envelope & post it back to the rotters.

    1. Avatar photo John says:

Exactly, and just imagine the cost to the environment and monetary, why not improve the network with all that wasted cash, and word of mouth will do the advertising for you, if your network is all that.

I put all that rubbish in the recycling bin each month. All red and white papers and full colour book. They’re telling me about mobile handsets and internet etc. what a waste company.

  5. Avatar photo Behzad says:

I recently left Virgin as they kept increasing the price of my internet connection. They offered me £20 for the 100mbps connection, for which they were going to charge me almost £35 after the latest price increase.

On what planet is ripping off your customers a good business model?

    1. Avatar photo Bent says:

Get a 5g router problem solved and a SIM card unlimited simple as . to virgin media

  6. Avatar photo Phil says:

Just say BIG NO to their offer. They will put up price faster than any other ISPs. I know they will.

  7. Avatar photo GG says:

Just done my 18 monthly Virgin price shuffle.

Call up the help line -> they’ll offer about £3 off -> ignore, stay on the line. Talk to the nice retentions chap -> offers midway between full price and what i’m paying -> say no thanks and go through to cancellations -> she didn’t even mention leaving, just straight into negotiations.

I’ve got a price pretty much as above plus a speed bump for free. Cheaper than last year and for 18 months so should give some clarity around FTTP in my area by then.

    1. Avatar photo Alex A says:

Wonder how long Virgin will carry on the negotiate over the phone at the end of contract cycle.

Most people stuck with it knowing that their only other choice was FTTC but now FTTP is growing at a fast rate I hope Virgin will change.

Their infrastructure is paid off (their XGS PON upgrade comes at £100 per property, openreach I think is about £350) so they could win on price.

    2. Avatar photo GG says:

Yeah, the father in law pays £190 a month (!). He nearly keeled over when I told him what I paid (he has TV etc too, but still…)

    3. Avatar photo Guest says:

That’s what I did as the initial 18 month contract was £28 for 100MB, I was out of contract so it would have gone up to £44 and the automated line only offered a discount of £3 which is poor so I spoke to the advisor and explained that I was looking at a rival operator as they could offer a better price per month then VMO2 so they came back with 18 months on the same package for £33 which yes I pay more but I rather pay that then the £44!

My only gripe is that they immediately reduced the cost of the 1GB plan a bare 3 weeks after I had renewed the contract!

Interesting though the person I spoke to had a personal view that it ought to be free to all users!

    4. Avatar photo Bent says:

Your a mug staying with virgin media they only rip you off I’m glad I divorced them last September now with three 4g home broadband plug and play router and unlimited data only sim contract for £19 a month yes I am in a network limited area but I wouldn’t touch sky bt or talk talk they all crap and greedy like virgin media rip you off and rape you of your dignity . Unfortunately 5g is still not available since may 2020 as 5g is now in Telford since may 2020 what a joke .

  8. Avatar photo Steve says:

They operate a strange pricing model with such a range of differing retention offers. Cost is the bottom line for me at the moment so I’ve ditched them in favour of 4g broadband and honestly I’m not disappointed three months on. Same for others I know. Sure, I’d have liked to stay but when their prices are often double for what I can get elsewhere I decided to leave. I was sad as my custom went back two decades and apart from the odd blip it was great, but customer service is the horrid 1990’s style exploitation of foreign call centre workers too which I loathe, no one wins when the business model is staffed this way.

    1. Avatar photo Alex A says:

What was it like before Liberty Global buying it in 2015? I heard the company changed a lot more to its current money grabbing self after 2015.

    2. Avatar photo GG says:

I spoke to 2 VM people today in 2 departments. Both UK based.
The last time one of their technicians was here (about 18 months ago) he did mention they were bringing all the call centres back to the UK.

    3. Avatar photo Steve says:

It’s hard to measure for me from before 2015 but I seem to think its offshore call centres weren’t something I encountered at the time, so their current style of customer service has probably been since Liberty’s involvement. Offshoring is a peculiarity that others seem to have done away with yet it occasionally rears its head with companies time to time before they revert.

    4. Avatar photo Dave says:

I’ve called them a few times over the last few months and it’s always been people who are clearly British albeit with distinct regional accents.

  9. Avatar photo Mr T says:

I’m currently on VM 1 gig package (1130/52 I get about 850MB down) with TV and phone which costs £89 per month. I signed up with Community Fibre 4 months ago as the made me an offer I couldn’t refuse (800/800 but it’s more like 930/940).
So far CF has been great so I’ll be ditching VM in a couple when my contract ends in May 2022. The last time I renewed my VM contract the agent told me if I remove the phone and TV from my package it would increase the price, I found this very strange but went along with it.
I’ve been with VM since the launch of their 100MB service many moons ago, I haven’t got a problem with their service just their prices.

    1. Avatar photo Bent says:

Complete con virgin media ever since liberty global took over in 2013 I think .

  10. Avatar photo Mrs g potts says:

Should try rewarding your loyal customers with discounts or offers shame on you virgin media

  11. Avatar photo MrDeo says:

I wish their “Standard” pricing was actually “Standard”.
I am on the 200 meg service and it’s £59 PCM. (basic/cheapest phone plan) No extra options added.

Service is good in my area, but wish I could get something else, 4 meg DSL will not cut it, and 4g service is too bad.

ah well, call to retentions to ask for match to new customer deal now I guess.

  12. Avatar photo Joseph Ledgerton says:

Received an email from Virgin informing me that my new contract would be £51.Spoke to a nice lady at the Indian call centre who applied a discount to bring the price down to £38.Then applied a further loyalty discount to reduce the price to £28.Very happy with that result, have been with Virgin for about 24 years and see no reason to change
