Mobile operator Vodafone UK has this morning announced that their ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) network is now being deployed to cover a further five airports, such as the George Best Airport in Belfast and Newcastle International Airport. All were installed by Exchange Communications.
The two deployments mentioned above have already been completed, but Vodafone and Exchange Communications have already started work to deliver 5G across an additional three locations – the Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow Airports – in the very near future.
Andrea Dona, Vodafone’s UK Network and Development Director, said: “Millions of passengers use these airports every year, so we’re delighted to be able to give them fast data speeds, however busy it gets. Meanwhile, each of these airports have an important role to play in their region and their local economy. So it’s great to be able to supply the connectivity they need to continue to grow and succeed.”
I can only assume this is the new-ish Vodafone Ericsson DAS. These are live at Gatwick and you can get about 800 Mbps off them with n78 5G and LTE B20+7+3. Not sure if these have B8 or not, though.
You can also see them in the Samsung KX near King’s Cross.
Not a bad speed at all! I wonder how many cells they need to give such good coverage.
Using Vodafone last 2 years.
Overall coverage and speed is not bad.
EE is faster but coverage and voice calls quality is not great and calls drops more often also EE wifi-calling is rubbish.
My coverage and speed experience is the opposite of yours. I guess it all depends where we are.
My experience of EE is similar to @Kid where it’s fast, reliable and call quality is pretty good as to other MVOs, Vodafone & O2 around here have the exact same appalling coverage including speeds with Three just out doing them by a thin margin.
In fact, I lost count the number of times that Vodafone couldn’t provide a workable service with speeds unusable.
What all MVOs need to do other than EE as they already offer a decent coverage is improve their infrastructure by building more masts and improving the back haul to the masts.
Will Vodafone be sharing their airport towers with other networks or is it for their own customers only?
I’m guessing it’s not towers but indoor distributed antenna systems.
