Broadband ISP Giganet Probes Degraded UK Service Problem UPDATE2

Tuesday, Jul 25th, 2023 (10:52 am) - Score 2,408

Internet provider Giganet are today reporting that they’re investigating a problem across their national UK network, which may be causing some leased lines (Ethernet) and full fibre (FTTP) broadband customers to experience degraded service quality.

According to the customer complaints we’ve seen, most of the gripes started in the small hours of this morning. The problems appear to present as a routing/peering fault, where some online sites and servers may be fine, while others might be sporadically slow or fail completely (timeout). Broadband speeds and latency times have also been impacted for some users.

At the time of writing, most of the gripes seem to be related to the CityFibre side of their network, although we have seen some potentially related complaints emanating from those on Openreach’s side too. The possibility thus exists that this issue might impact other ISPs, but so far, we’ve not seen any evidence of that.

Service Status Update – Jul 25, 2023 – 09:24 BST

Investigating – We are investigating an incident that has impacted the service quality for our Full Fibre and Leased Line customers, resulting in a degradation of service.

Start Time: 25/07/2023 – 02:00 am

Areas Affected: National

Service Impact: Degradation of service.

Further updates will be provided as we learn more.

We apologise for any inconvenience this outage causes.

Giganet has so far been fairly quick to spot and report the problems, so hopefully they’ll soon have it fixed. Take note that using a third-party DNS provider has no impact on this sort of issue.

UPDATE 12:05pm

The provider’s latest update notes that their “Networking teams have identified a potential issue with our transit providers and have engaged them for further investigation.”

The problem appears to be resolved, the Giganet saying: “Our network teams have identified the root cause [and] have completed work to restore the affected services. We are now monitoring to ensure that the services remain stable.

This affected me when I was working last night, around 2am my work VPN connection ground to a halt, but only on the download side. I was getting around 700kbps download and 70mbps up – I am on their Openreach FTTP 500/70 connection whilst I wait for them to build out their network here fully (Totton) .

I only managed to get my VPN connection to work by dropping the connection on my router for a few minutes then reconnecting. A reboot of the router or a quick bounce on the connection made no difference.

I have giganet (holbury, Southampton, where it was down yesterday morning as it still is. I’ve only just subscribed to them five days ago and this is the second time it’s been down since then.
