Ogi See Wales Full Fibre Customers Top 15K – Opens More High Street Outlets

Broadband ISP Ogi, which is deploying a multi-Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to premises across parts of South Wales, has today announced an expansion of their high street presence to more locations – this reflects an ongoing partnership with the ‘Get Connection’ retail chain. A 500Mbps tier is also on special offer.

In case anybody has forgotten, the UK’s largest independent mobile phone retailer, Get Connected, started offering Ogi’s ultrafast full fibre broadband and voice packages in their high street stores for the very first time last August (here). This occurred in areas where Ogi’s network actually exists, such as in stores across Abergavenny, Chepstow, Haverfordwest and Monmouth.

NOTE: Ogi is backed by £200m via Infracapital, employs over 210 staff and originally aimed to cover 150,000 premises in South Wales by 2025.

The latest development is that Ogi has now added the Blackwood, Pontypool and Tonypandy stores to its existing locations. At the same time, the ISP will be using this to help push a new promotion, which offers a special 500Mbps package (normally it’s 400Mbps) for just £21 per month on a 12-month term (£49 thereafter) with free setup.

Chief Revenue Officer, Sally-Anne Skinner, said:

“Offering 500Mbps at a very competitive price, we hope to once again boost interest in full fibre services here in Wales. The internet has become a vital utility, and accessing it shouldn’t be based on how much you can afford to pay. For too long communities have had to suffer poor speeds and eye watering prices. We’ve always said we’re here to change that – and once again we’re reflecting that in our offer to customers.

Extending our partnership with Get Connected also offers wannabe Ogi customers another way to find out about our services face-to-face, and is a welcome boost to the independent high streets across south Wales.”

The network operator has so far covered a total of 100,000 premises with their new full fibre network – most of them residential – in Wales up to the end of 2023 (up from 60k on 30th June 2023) and they’re also now home to a total of over 15,000 customers, which is up from 10,000 on 4th Jan 2024 and 6,000 on 30th June 2023.

Essentially a 250% increase in take up since they started having a High Street presence, quite impressive. Perhaps other altnet operators should sit up and take notice. Door to door sales are always going to put potential customers backs up before you’ve even started. It should also be noted that BT and VMO2 both maintain a High Street presence.

The latest accounts show a less rosy picture. Turnover down. Cost of Sales Up, Loss Up

      @Bob

      When was that up to?

Accounts dated 31-Dec 22 for Group Company Accounts(Spectrum Fibre Ltd)

The company structure is quite complex yet another company own Spectrum Fibre Ltd

      BT Bob loves it.

15% penetration rate is very low even taking into account the age of their network. It will be a tough job keeping their investors on board. Ripe for consolidation.

Not that bad with 40% of their network being less than a year old. Going from 10% of 60K to 15% of 100K in 9 months is actually quite impressive. At last check CityFibre was only about 10.5% and most of their network has been in a couple of years now.

@Big Dave – CF added a million RFS to their footprint in 2023. That’s increase from 2.2M to 3.2M or nearly a 50% increase. So no, “most” of it hasn’t been in for a couple of years now…

That’s an awful lot of staff for so few customers.

Agreed. As with many of the smaller alt-nets they don’t really have enough scale to cover their operational costs.

Try getting through to their business sales or customer care phone lines though or a response via email. They have no call waiting feature at all, it simply hangs up after 30secs or goes to a generic voicemail message. I’ll probably have to go to a store to get an answer but then what are the chances they’ll only deal with residential customers there.

Note: It was installed quick as a flash when I signed up my residential premises in November.

Any comment on Ogi’s recent redundancies? they seem keen to push PR releases for pricing discounts, but avoid discussing their over hiring and falling short of take up targets.
