EE UK Mobile Network Suffering Problems with Wi-Fi Calling UPDATE

Thursday, Aug 1st, 2024 (3:14 pm) - Score 9,440

Some customers of mobile operator EE (BT) appear to be suffering from an outage or connectivity problems on their Wi-Fi Calling service today. This normally enables consumers with a supporting Smartphone to harness their home broadband or other WiFi connection in order to make mobile voice calls.

The situation for some customers appears to have started early yesterday evening (or late afternoon), while others only began to notice it today. Complaints about the outage can be found littered across social media and EE’s own Community Forum, as well as via our own inbox.

Customers who have managed to reach EE’s support via the phone are being told, via an automated message, that “we are attempting to fix a known problem with Wi-Fi calling,” while others claim that EE told them they’re “working on it as high priority and should be fixed within a couple of days.”

The operator doesn’t yet appear to have issued a more public statement, but we are currently attempting to get one. The outage itself appears to have been a bit sporadic, since it appeared to be working again for some earlier this morning, but has since fallen over again.

UPDATE 4:11pm

We’ve had a comment from EE.

A spokesperson for EE told ISPreview:

“We’re aware of an issue affecting some voice calls over WiFi. We’re working hard to resolve the issue and apologise for any inconvenience. All other voice calls, including those made over apps, are working as normal.”

In terms of calls made over apps, they’re talking about those like WhatsApp, Microsoft Teams or FaceTime that may use WiFi too, but not Wi-Fi Calling.

Yep not working on multiple iPhone last here on different WIFI networks since last night, worked again briefly this morning, now not working again.

I have 2 iPhones – one for work and one personal, bot hon ee and both rely on wifi calling. one has service (did – its now fallen over again and the other has none!! this is a joke!

Sounds like a complete mess about but have you tried linking your EE number to an Alexa as a workaround? I don’t know if this works but worth a try of it works on a different system?

  3. Avatar photo Obi says:

Was thinking the iOS 18 beta was the culprit prior to reading this article. On a positive note, RCS messaging is now working on iPhones, but EE only as far as I’m aware.

Same here. I also checked my router and APs…

Yes, same here. As I’d recently updated OPNSense, and it seemed not to be working on multiple networks (EE and Three/Smarty), I’d started tcpdump/wireshark debugging last night. On seeing this, I checked the Smarty device, and it was working….
      Thanks, Mark, for the heads-up.

As for EE saying “nothing to see here, move on, app calling still works fine” – their PR dept. obviously don’t understand the impact of SMS not working on MFA systems. SMS, ofc, isn’t working either as it’s not that calls aren’t working – it’s that the phones aren’t registering.

The fact that EE haven’t said anything on their website or community forums about this even now is shocking. A little transparency goes a long, long way. Especially when EE’s default reponse to bad indoor coverage is “Use Wifi Calling”.

We’ve had no WiFi calling since yesterday. Plus today the network reception, which at best is v poor in our area under normal conditions, is non-existent today. Not great in a rural area. We’re grateful to have our copper landline still. For how much longer, who knows? But this outage highlights how isolated we would be without it.

  6. Avatar photo Fritz says:

Still down which is mostly fine, but an acknowledgement from EE would be nice.

Good to see that BT has finally realised they’re having problems with the BT to EE migration by.. launching a Brand Migration Trial, for £50 you can help fix all the problems they have uncovered…

  8. Avatar photo Brad says:

I thought I was the only one having a problem! Thanks Mark & the team, much appreciated.

    1. Avatar photo Primrose says:

So did I. I spent most of Monday night trying to fix it. I thought it was my phone. As this suddenly happened to my last phone. We rely on it for so many reasons as we have No mobile signal at all at home. It did come back on again for a while last night. Just relieved I don’t need to buy a new phone. Needs sorting ASAP.

MVNO 1p Mobile is also affected, no WiFi calling since the early hours of August 1st, if not earlier.

Still not working on my Xiaomi Poco X4 Pro. Thankfully in good reception area.

  11. Avatar photo Danny says:

Has anyone tried using the EE via an Alexa by linking your number? I don’t know if it will work but maybe worth someone trying as a workaround?

EE’s IMS seems absolute trash after all of these years.

    1. Avatar photo Old Blue Shirt Guy says:

This. Their IMS has had choppy calls for years, wifi calling has always been a bit hit and miss and now this. EE is also the only network that can’t support conference calls on the iPhone and the only network with poor call quality to 3 numbers. They’re an absolute omnishambles.

  13. Avatar photo Big Dave says:

Seems to be back on this morning. I assume the problem has been fixed.

  14. Avatar photo roger says:

Not working in area PL18 9SQ as of 14:27 2nd August

  15. Avatar photo Richard nuth says:

who cares its BT crap with 3 very old networks mashed together lol only good in london

    1. Avatar photo AD says:

It’s very good crap at that, it consistently tops benchmarks and tests even outside of London. Even like small market towns like my own, they’re the most consistent. Vodafone even after various upgrades still suffers from pitiful congestion on the main road of the town
