TBB Launch Postcode Broadband Availability Notifications by Subscription

Independent broadband mapping experts Thinkbroadband have today launched a useful new tool that allows you to subscribe to receive notifications about any changes to local fixed broadband availability within a postcode area. Users of the service can track up to 5 postcodes and it will send an email when changes occur.

The new tool can track key changes in the local postcode area, such as when an alternative network puts a new broadband service live or Openreach introduces a “stop sell” flag on certain services/products. The data for this is of course based off TBB’s own database, which requires a lot of manual checking/updating to stay current, and so the changes won’t all be identified in real-time (expect a time lag).

Naturally it’s important to remember that some postcode areas can be quite large and so this won’t necessarily reflect changes for your specific property (house, MDU, office etc.) as it doesn’t drill down to the per-premises level. But it is a useful indication of local activity, and many people will thus find it useful.

    Doesn’t work in Hull unfortunately!

    1. Avatar photo Andrew Ferguson says:

Why do you say it does not work in Hull, they have postcodes and systems reflect what they know about each one.

It may be there a lack of data for a specific postcode, and while you are free to just moan, it would help more people if you emailed tbb with the postcode so it can be looked into.

I’ve said it doesn’t work in Hull, because it doesn’t work in Hull, with HU post codes?

With it being a new tool, I thought they might have taken into account the recent uptake of Altnets/providers here and become the first checker to work with HU postcodes.

Have you tried it? If it gave nothing back it could be a terminated postcode, or just no data – which is rare but can happen and public feedback is a massive help there, as while many hours spent reducing no data to a minimum a small number will slip through.

      HU6 7LS – random postcode picked from a map

      Connexin available
      Grain available
      KCOM available
      MS3 available

The data behind is tool is not new, and is just a different way of showing it to the public hence tools like

Yep. My post code shows nothing, when there’s at least one Alt net available. So not sure what’s going on there…

    5. Avatar photo Andrew Ferguson says:

Impossible to answer without knowing the postcode email to andrew@thinkbroadband.com and will look.

  2. Avatar photo Phil says:

Good feature but some of it are missing out eg: G.fast – TF7 5PJ is showing no G.fast but it does indeed have G.fast on it (Cabinet 9)

    1. Avatar photo Rik says:

I believe Openreach no longer sell G.Fast so those who are on it can stay on it, but no new provisions will take place so whilst not technically correct, it avoids confusion among anyone who isn’t already on it.

    2. Avatar photo Phil says:

Openreach still sell G.fast in few isps. Eg: UnchainedISP, AAISP, File Sanctuary and Cerberus ISP.

  3. Avatar photo sniff says:

we’ve had virgin media in our postcode for over a year and it says ‘it maybe available’.

It its not accurate whats the point of it.

  4. Avatar photo Pete says:

It’s a great idea in principle – however isn’t granular enough. My home postcode covers 23 properties. 8 of those are FTTPoD and DEL ADSL only.
However the remainder have FTTP available to order..

  5. Avatar photo Loz says:

I can’t see an option to sign up to email updates

    1. Avatar photo Mark1 says:

Loz, There is a register option at the top of the page.

  6. Avatar photo Mark 1 says:

This checker doesn’t find any services available for postcode HU17 0ES and many others that start with HU17 which is the town of Beverley and surrounding villages.
I will sign up for updates.
