Network security giant Bitdefender has issued a notice to customers of EE’s broadband and mobile services (as well as some non-customers), which cautions them to be on the lookout for fraudulent text messages (SMS) about expiring “reward points“. The dead giveaway here is that the provider doesn’t actually have a reward points (loyalty) scheme.
As above, the messages are designed to pressure recipients into thinking a large batch of non-existent “reward points” are about to expire and the only way, it claims, to avoid that is to click a link in order to redeem them. The message is of course a classic pressure based phishing scam, which aims to harvest your personal and financial data.
The reward scam has actually been running for at least the past few months – in different forms – and EE even have a dedicated page about it (here), which usefully notes that the operator will “never” let you know about points via text message or email, time pressure you to claim points, use unauthorized mobile numbers or request your personal or financial information (via a text message).

Such messages should instead be forwarded to the industry-wide scam text/call reporting service on 7726. Credits to Joe for the news tip.
