Independent broadband mapping experts Thinkbroadband have today launched a useful new tool that allows you to subscribe to receive notifications about any changes to local fixed broadband availability within a postcode area. Users of the service can track up to 5 postcodes and it will send an email when changes occur.

The service is designed to help UK consumers with old analogue based phone (PSTN / WLR) and medical telecare systems to safely migrate to modern broadband-based (FTTP etc.) connections with digital phone (IP-based) services.

Ofcom UK Open Second Investigation into IX Wireless’ Broadband Poles

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today opened a second investigation into wireless broadband operator IX Wireless (supported by ISP 6Gi / Opus Broadband). The probe will examine whether the provider failed in its duty to ensure that its overhead lines were at the correct height and that they complied with rules around the inspection and maintenance of infrastructure.

Virgin Media UK Create Fixed Wholesale Broadband Unit for Consumer and Business

Broadband network operator and retail ISP Virgin Media (O2) has this morning announced the creation of a single dedicated Fixed Wholesale unit, which will bring together their consumer and business facing wholesale teams under one roof. This will allow rival ISPs to access their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network – currently available to 7 million premises.

Abingdon-based broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has built their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 600,000 premises (mostly in remote rural parts of England) and is home to 150,000 customers, has today announced that they’ve adopted Vyntelligence’s AI video technology – the first UK retail fibre provider to do so – to improve customer installation journeys by reducing unnecessary work.

Openreach Sees UK Full Fibre Broadband Traffic Grow 35 Percent in H1 2025

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today revealed that broadband data traffic across their UK full fibre (FTTP) network alone increased by more than 35% between Jan and June 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. The busiest day so far was on 21st Feb, when a large Fortnite (video game) patch saw users gobble a total of 372PB (PetaBytes).

Wireless ISP WiFi Scotland Brings Full Fibre Broadband to Rural Moray

Some 43 homes and businesses around remote rural parts of Moray in the Scottish Highlands have gained access to gigabit broadband speeds thanks to a new deployment by local ISP WiFi Scotland. The provider was able to harness public funding via the R100 Voucher Scheme (SBVS) to connect premises around the Craigellachie and Ben Aigan areas.

Sky UK Informs Workers that up to 600 Staff Face the Chop

Sky UK (Sky Broadband, Sky TV, Sky Mobile – Comcast etc.) has today begun notifying their workforce that up to 600 of them are likely to be made redundant by the end of this year, while around 300 more may be impacted by a wider business reorganisation. Many of those expected to be cut appear to come from Sky’s tech and networking teams.

O2 UK Expands Mobile 5G Standalone Network to 500 Towns and Cities

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has announced that they now have the “country’s largest 5G Standalone deployment” after extending the coverage of their new ultrafast mobile broadband network to parts of 500 towns and cities, reaching more than 70% of the UK’s population (c.49 million people). Crucially this is provided to consumers “at no extra cost“.
