Broadband and mobile giant BT (EE) has today announced a new deal that, as part of their on-going work to phase-out Huawei, will turn Finnish telecoms firm Nokia into their “largest infrastructure partner” for ultrafast 5G based Radio Access Network (RAN) equipment and related UK network coverage.

Financial analyst firm Cowen has attempted to predict the capability of SpaceX’s new mega constellation of small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Starlink satellites, which they claim should eventually be able to serve 485,000 simultaneous data streams in the USA with 100Mbps speeds or 1.5 million streams with over-subscription.

UK ISP The 4th Utility, which last month secured a £25m investment boost from DIF Capital Partners to support the next phase of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband rollout (here), has today announced that they will create 60 new jobs in Greater Manchester.

The annual Connected Britain Awards 2020 (Total Telecom) have announced the winners of this year’s event, which among other things saw “hyperfast” UK broadband ISP Hyperoptic scoop the “Consumer Connectivity Project of the Year” award and Glide win for the “SME Service Provider of the Year” category.

The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, has warned MPs that at the current pace it will take until 2033 to achieve universal UK coverage of gigabit-capable broadband, or 2027 if some £9bn worth of cuts in tax (e.g. business rates) and red tape can be found. Considerably later than PM Boris Johnson’s target for 2025.

Cityfibre have recently begun replacing some fairly modern Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband equipment in areas (e.g. York) that were originally built out by FibreNation (FN), back when the company was still owned by UK ISP TalkTalk.

The Solutions Director (Colin Kirkpatrick) for Emtelle UK, which is a global manufacturer of blown fibre and ducted network solutions for the industry, has told ISPreview.co.uk in a new interview that ISPs should focus on a “One Dig” strategy to boost the roll-out of “gigabit broadband” by building and sharing spare duct space.

Some of those trying to take one of UK ISP BT’s ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband packages have been left confused by how the provider is handling the transition to their new VoIP style ‘Digital Voice’ service, which stems from the fact that it isn’t yet available to every Openreach based full fibre line.

The UK ISP division of the Post Office has recently revealed that customers of their broadband and phone bundles are set to face another price hike, which will be introduced from 2nd November 2020. The biggest change is that the standard monthly price for home phone line rental will jump by 30.43% from £11.50 to £15.

Good news. Mobile operator Three UK appears to be holding to their September 2020 launch window (here) for eSIM support on their network (4G and 5G) and have now added an eSIM Support and Activation page to their website. But there’s still no firm word on whether or when Apple Watches will be supported.

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced that, as part of their effort to “deliver the UK’s fastest 5G network” and upgrade 4G connectivity (mobile broadband), they have signed a new £100m investment deal with SSE Enterprise Telecoms to upgrade their fibre optic capacity across 250 towns and cities.
