The latest Q1-2013 financial results from EE (Orange UK and T-Mobile) have revealed that their fixed line Home Broadband subscriber base increased by just +1,000 in the quarter to total 694,000, while their 4G (LTE) based mobile subscribers grew from zero to 318,000 in the first five months since its launch.

The government’s Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey, has told the House of Commons that he still hopes 90% of the United Kingdom will have access to a superfast broadband (25Mbps+) ISP by the end of 2015. But he admitted that they were still “actively looking at the options” for a post-2015 strategy.

The latest Experian Hitwise statistics have revealed that the UK spent 37 billion hours online in 2012 and 22% of all that time was spent on a social network (e.g. Facebook, Twitter etc.), which equates to about 13 minutes of every hour online. ISP BT Retail has changed the terms of its Yahoo! Mail (e.g. @btinternet.com and @openworld.com addresses) based email accounts so that, effective from 17th June 2013, any customers who have not used their mail accounts for more than 150 days will find the account closed.

The Northumberland County Council (NCC) in North East England has today signed a new £18.9 million state aid supported deal with BT that will make superfast broadband (25Mbps+) speeds available to 91% of premises by early 2016 (95% will be covered by the fibre optic based FTTC network but some won’t be “superfast“).

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned several ads for TalkTalk’s YouView TV product, which misleadingly described the set-top-box as being “free” despite a £50 install fee. The watchdog also banned an ad for T-Mobile’s (EE) £36 Full Monty Plan after it promoted “Unlimited internet” despite a Traffic Management policy.

The at800.tv (DMSL) group, which was setup by UK mobile operators as part of a £180m effort to stop new 4G (LTE) based mobile services in the 800MHz band from knocking out digital terrestrial TV (Freeview) services, has announced a third interference trial in Brentford and Isleworth (London Borough of Hounslow).

BT’s strategy to retire their older 20th Century Network (20CN) based broadband ISP services (e.g. 8Mbps ADSL / IPStream Connect products) remains on course to begin its final phase in October 2013, which by 31st March 2014 should see related services being removed from a total of 2549 telephone exchanges around the United Kingdom.
