UPDATE 4am is Best for Getting the UK Fastest Broadband ISP Speeds

New research from uSwitch, which analysed data from 2.3 million anecdotal internet speed tests (carried out between 21st July 2012 and 20th January 2013), has concluded that consumers get the fastest broadband speeds if they go online at 4am (least busy period) and the slowest if they start surfing at 9pm.

Filtronic UK Win GBP14m Contract to Tackle Freeview TV Woes from 4G

Filtronic, which produces microwave and millimetre-wave products for telecom firms, has signed a new contract to build “mitigation products” that will be used to help some of the 2.3 million UK homes that could suffer from a loss of Digital TV (Freeview) when the new 4G based Mobile Broadband services go live in the 800MHz band.

Most Blind and Partially Sighted Older People Have Never Gone Online

A new telephone and face-to-face survey of around 370 blind or partially sighted UK people over the age of 65, which was jointly conducted by the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and BT, has revealed that 87% of respondents have never used the internet.

The remote rural villages of Llangedwyn and Llanfechain in Powys (Wales, UK) now have access to wireless broadband download speeds of up to 100Mbps (Megabits per second), which is all thanks to a new and curiously marketed “fibre over the air” service from local ISP eXwavia.

BT and Police Confirm Sharp Reduction in UK Copper Cable Crime

The battle to tackle copper cable and metal theft appears to finally be turning. BT informs ISPreview.co.uk that there was a 50% fall in incidents and a 24% reduction in faults pertaining to malicious damage of their UK phone and broadband ISP network last year.

UPD BT Openreach UK Engineers Slowly Recover Broadband Network

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national UK phone and internet access network, has told ISPreview.co.uk that they’re “making every effort” to return services to normal after the recent bout of “heavy snowfall” caused damage to their telecoms platform and travel disruption across the country.

Sooner or later all ISPs will suffer some form of service disruption that can result in the loss of your internet connectivity. Most of these outages are resolved quickly but some can last for days, weeks or occasionally even months. Now a court in Germany has ruled that everybody has the right to compensation after an internet disruption.

UK Adopts FAST START Initiative to Boost the Superfast Broadband Rollout

The politicians responsible for the United Kingdom’s already heavily delayed national roll-out of superfast broadband services now have a new phrase to swing around, “Fast Start”, which will soon be available right across the country. The “new approach” will apparently smooth the deployment of faster connectivity by avoiding further delays.

The UK governments much delayed Communications Bill, which seeks to update and expand upon Ofcom’s ability to regulate the internet, telecoms, media sectors and could also introduce new online censorship measures (e.g. enforced parental controls and piracy website blocking), is now expected to publish its first White Paper “later this year“.

Akamai Average Global Broadband Speeds Hit 2.8Mbps as UK Tops 6.3Mbps

Akamai‘s latest quarterly State of the Internet Q3 2012 study claims that the average global broadband download speed has fallen by 6.8% since Q2 to reach 2.8Mbps (Megabits per second). By comparison the average speed in the United Kingdom reached 6.3Mbps (up from 5.7Mbps in Q2) and ranked us as 17th fastest in the world.

Ofcom UK Opens Bidding in Superfast 4G Mobile Broadband Auction

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today opened the bidding process for its auction of 4G (LTE or WiMAX) superfast Mobile Broadband radio spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz). A total of seven firms are bidding, although the main focus will be on the four primary mobile phone operators.

Hull ISP KC Find Snow Fuels 30 Percent Jump in Broadband Internet Traffic

East Yorkshire ISP KC has reported a 30% surge in internet traffic on their broadband network for the past week, which is believed to have been caused by heavy snow conditions forcing more people to work from home over cloud and Virtual Private Network (VPN) based services.

UK Establishes New Centre to Develop White Space Broadband Tech

The University of Strathclyde, with funding from the Scottish Funding Council, has opened a new Centre for White Space Communications that aims to develop new White Space (IEEE 802.22) based wireless technologies that can exploit the unused radio spectrum which exists between UK Digital TV channels.

ISP O2 UK Offers 6 Months FREE Home Broadband with 3 XBox Games

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK has confirmed that anybody who signs-up with one of their top two “unlimited” Home Broadband packages will get both 6 months of free service (3 months free for non-o2 mobile users) and also three Kinect compatible XBox 360 games (Nike+ Kinect, Forza Horizon and Nat Geo Kinect TV).

BT Superfast Broadband Contract for Devon and Somerset UK Delayed

The joint Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project in England, which is worth over £100m and hopes to make superfast broadband speeds of 25Mbps+ available to 85% of local premises by 2015 (rising to 100% by 2020), has been delayed following “significant” contract issues with BT.
