Mobile operator Three UK has today revealed that their 5G based (mobile broadband) network is now live across busy parts of some 193 UK towns and cities (equating to 1,250 cell sites and masts). On top of that they’re still boosting 4G speeds by extending the reach of their L-Band (1.4GHz) spectrum.

Low cost UK broadband ISP TalkTalk, which last year appeared to be taking a step back from their existing YouView (IPTV) based Pay TV products (here), appears to have quietly launched a new promotion that bundles their “fibre broadband” plans with a Freesat 500GB Recordable 4K TV Box (satellite dish and cabling not included).

The latest independent H2 2020 study of broadband coverage in UK new build homes has indicated that 88.5% of houses constructed last year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 87.3% in H1 2020), which rises to 97.7% for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services (unchanged).

UK ISP G.Network, which is currently building a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to homes and businesses in London, has refreshed their range of packages and prices. As part of that they’re offering some significant discounts on their fastest tiers (e.g. £22 per month for 6 months on 900Mbps).

Communications provider MS3, which runs an independent Dark Fibre and business focused broadband network in Hull (East Yorkshire), has informed us that they are about to embark on a 70km long “city-wide expansion” of their “full fibre” network and this will also be used to serve local homes.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today introduced a range of discounts across their various data based Pay As You Go (PAYG) bundles, unlimited data plans and mobile broadband (4G, 5G etc.) packages, which will either give you more data or reduce the monthly price by around 50% for the first 6 months of service.

Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media UK, specifically their pay TV service, may be pleased to learn that they can now add the ‘Sky Entertainment’ and ‘Sky Cinema’ channels in Ultra HD (4K) to their current package, which is available to all new Ultimate Oomph customers at no extra cost but will cost others an extra £6 per month.

The ITS Technology group is to lead a new consortium, which includes the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and NGE, that will invest £30 million in order to rollout a new 212km long gigabit-capable “full fibre” network across the Liverpool City Region so as to “create jobs and boost key sectors.”

The Newcastle City Council (NCC) has announced that they’ve appointed Aspire Technology Solutions – working in partnership with Virgin Media Business (Wholesale) – to extend a 100Gbps capable “full fibre” network to serve “hundreds of public sector sites across the region.”

Sky UK (Sky Mobile, Sky Broadband) and Vodafone have today published their responses to the Competition and Markets Authority‘s (CMA) on-going phase 2 investigation into the proposed £31bn merger between mobile operator O2 and broadband ISP (inc. TV, phone) Virgin Media, which raises a number of competition concerns.

UK ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has just completed another extension of their new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband and TV network to cover 2,600 homes in the large modern village of Allington (Kent), which is home to a local population of around 7,000 people.

TalkTalk has today shared a preview from the latest volume (2) of their new ‘Internet Insights‘ report with us, which is a quarterly analysis of the ISP’s network traffic and usage trends. For example, it notes that UK internet usage rose nationally by 40% during 2020, driven by streaming, online gaming and working from home.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which usually builds 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks to large residential (MDU) and office buildings, has announced that they’ve joined forces with house builder Avant Homes to help connect 2,000 households across 22 of the company’s new development sites in 2021 and beyond.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that, as part of the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) industry project, they will expand their 4G (mobile broadband) network in 579 rural areas during 2021 in order to improve signal coverage (333 in England, 132 in Scotland, 76 in Wales, and 38 in Northern Ireland).

London-focused broadband ISP CommunityFibre has announced that their 3Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network is now available to over 200,000 homes in the UK’s capital city, which represents a doubling of their coverage over the past year. On top of that their customer base has grown by 130% over the same period.

Complaints by rival mobile operators EE (BT) and Vodafone have resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning several adverts for O2’s (Telefonica) mobile service, which the authority ruled had “misleadingly” claimed itself to be “the UK’s No.1 Network,” albeit without adequate substantiation.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned several adverts for mobile operator Three UK after they all were found to have made the same “misleading” claim of offering the “Best Network for Data” (mobile broadband), which the watchdog said could not be substantiated.
