SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) has just connected the first 22 of 190 public sector sites (hospitals, council buildings, education sites etc.) in Aberdeenshire (Scotland) to their new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre network, which is being funded by £10.5 million from the UK Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) programme.

Some 4,700 additional premises in the residential area of Kensal Green, which sits within the London boroughs of Brent and Kensington and Chelsea, have just become the latest location to benefit from the expansion of Virgin Media UK’s new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network.

It’s been a long time coming but Sky UK (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has today confirmed that customers of their Sky Q Pay TV platform can now access Amazon’s Prime Video app on their set-top-boxes. At the same time Sky’s sibling NOW TV streaming service will become available on selected Amazon Fire TV devices.

London-focused FTTP broadband ISP CommunityFibre has helped to gift free laptops and 1 year of free broadband to 30 students and their families from the Lansbury Lawrence and Clara Grant primary schools in Poplar. The move aims to assist with home learning, courtesy of the Inclusive Broadband Connected Communities project.

The UK division of civil engineering firm Lite Access Technologies, which specialises in deploying fibre optic (e.g. FTTP) broadband infrastructure (they’ve won contracts with Cityfibre, Gigaclear etc.), has filed a notice of intent to appoint an administrator after they suffered “challenges” related to their “ongoing builds” and COVID-19.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband helped to push internet traffic up to a new peak of 18.29Tbps (Terabits per second) last Sunday 6th December 2020, which is up sharply from the previous peak of 16.6Tbps recorded only last month (here). Sky said their network coped well with this surge.

Shell Energy has informed “all customers” who signed up before 2nd September 2020 that, from 11th January 2021, some of them will face a price hike on their home broadband and call services. The move is expected to hit 112,000 customers, although around 42,000 on copper cables will receive a free upgrade to “fibre“.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today fined BT (Openreach) £6.3m after they were found to have “failed to meet regulatory obligations” during a tender for the recent £50m Northern Ireland Public Sector Shared Network contract in 2017/18. The decision follows a complaint made by rival company Eir.

Cardiff-based UK ISP Spectrum Internet has appointed a new CEO, Ben Allwright, to help oversee the provider’s planned £200m deployment of a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network (here), which aims to cover 150,000 homes and businesses across South Wales by late 2025.

Hampshire-based UK ISP Giganet, which offers Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages to homes via both the Openreach and Cityfibre networks, appears to have expanded their relationship with the latter to include coverage in Portsmouth, Swindon, Reading, Plymouth, Crawley and Horsham.

A new Censuswide survey of 2,005 UK gamers, which was commissioned by broadband ISP Zen Internet, has warned that internet traffic could jump higher than usual on Christmas Day as people unwrap the new generation of video game consoles (Xbox X, PS5) and games, most of which will demand large software updates.

Belfast-based UK ISP Fibrus, which is deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across Northern Ireland, have embarrassingly had to inform some of their customers in the South Down constituency that their speeds will need to be significantly downgraded due to a lack of network capacity.

London-centric broadband ISP CommunityFibre, which is busy deploying their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across large apartment buildings in the UK’s capital city, has today concluded an agreement to launch a new branded “Community Fibre TV” service using the Netgem TV (IPTV) platform.

A new survey by Satellite operator Eutelsat has claimed that UK homes with “poor broadband” connectivity can end up selling for £38,902 less than their market value, which is said to reflect the fact that respondents would only be willing to buy such a house if it came with a 16% discount.

Scottish business ISP HighNet has launched a new sub-brand called BrawBand, which is aimed at home broadband consumers and will harness Cityfibre’s new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network. But initially its availability will be limited to those covered by the new network in Inverness.

The National Infrastructure Commission for Wales (NICW) has published a report that calls on the Welsh Government to “urgently establish” a Barrier Busting Taskforce to aid investment in broadband, but they also warn that “too much attention” has been paid to FTTP and “not enough” on improving Mobile Broadband (e.g. 5G).
