Liberty Global, the parent of cable broadband ISP Virgin Media UK and various other European operators, has informed shareholders that they’ll be starting work on 10Gbps broadband connectivity “pretty quickly” by using a mix of a future DOCSIS 4.0 upgrades and more Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

UK ISP BT appears to have quietly introduced a new product page for “broadband only deals,” which remove the requirement to bundle in a home phone (voice) service (probably SOGEA). Previously, you either got a traditional copper line or a Digital Voice (VoIP) solution, but not a standalone option.

Fibre optic developer Cityfibre UK has announced that they’ve begun work to rollout a new gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in the coastal East Sussex town of Eastborne, which is being supported by a private investment of £26 million.

Cityfibre has today announced that they intend to invest £42 million in order to cover the large North Yorkshire (England) town of Middlesbrough with access to their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which is being supported by civil engineering firm MAP Group (UK).

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has this morning announced that their new 636Mbps (41Mbps upload) capable “Ultimate Oomph” broadband, phone, mobile and TV bundle is now available. Existing customers, who currently receive an average speed of 516Mbps, will be upgraded to the new speed “at no extra cost.”

The founder and CEO of UK rural “full fibre” broadband ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), Barry Forde MBE, has this morning announced that he intends to retire by the end of this year. The provider’s Board is currently overseeing the ongoing process of appointing a successor.

Contract-free UK mobile operator VOXI, which is a sibling of Vodafone, has today launched a new 5G based (mobile broadband) tariff that will give unlimited data, calls and texts for just £10 a month, for up to 6 months, to anyone who has lost their job as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic (equivalent to a 70% discount).

City focused full fibre (FTTP/B) ISP Hyperoptic, which currently covers over 400,000 UK premise and holds an aspiration to cover 5 million by the end of 2024 (here), has today dropped the price of their top gigabit (900Mbps+ average speed) plan to just £40 per month for the first 12 months (£60 thereafter)..

The combined reach of 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) speed capable ISP networks, via both Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and DOCSIS 3.1 technologies, has now helped to increase national “gigabit broadband” coverage to 34.1% of UK premises (up sharply from just 10% one year ago).

Budget conscious UK ISP TalkTalk will today reintroduce 24 month contract terms to their home broadband packages, at least for a limited period, and start offering “3 months free” service on all of their most popular “fibre” plans (FTTC, G.fast and FTTP). The one-off postage cost for routers has also been reduced to £4.95.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK will today further discount their prices for new customers taking out their standalone ultrafast home broadband packages, which for example will see their entry-level 108Mbps (average speed) plan fall from £29 to just £24.99 per month for 18 months (£46 thereafter).

Mobile operator Three UK appears to have confirmed that its £70m business process outsourcing contract with Capita, which was signed in late 2016 as part of a 7-year deal to improve sales and customer support (among other things), has been scrapped 2 years early following allegations of poor performance.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has reported an increase in the amount of internet traffic flowing over their network during the first night (Thursday) of the new COVID-19 lockdown in England, which at 9:10pm yesterday saw data traffic jump to 6.46Tbps (Terabits per second).

A new survey from Resume.io has attempted to rank 482 UK towns to identify the best ones for home working (WFH), which examines various different factors (e.g. broadband performance and coverage, house prices, WiFi hotspots, life satisfaction, cost of living etc.). Overall Llandough in Wales came top with a score of 80.9 out of 100.

Broadband ISP BT (EE) appears to have publicly hinted that they are developing their first WiFi equipped set-top-box (STB) for pay TV customers, which seems set to be followed by “multi-room capability” and plans for a “seamless TV” experience – both in and out of the home (i.e. via fixed line and mobile broadband).

The parent of mobile operator Three UK, CK Hutchison Holdings, has officially announced that they’re in an “advanced stage of negotiations” to potentially sell their mast and rooftop infrastructure across Europe to Cellnex in a transaction that could be worth c.£9bn (10bn Euros); it might also boost their 5G rollout.

Cityfibre has today signed £1.5bn worth of civil engineering contracts (overall total of £2.5bn), which means they’ve now secured enough capacity to extend their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to 5 million UK premises, with all projects scheduled to be in build by summer 2021.
