A new batch of independent data has revealed the top 30 local authorities across the United Kingdom with the highest availability of ultrafast “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) broadband connectivity, which unsurprisingly sees the table topped by Hull, East Yorkshire and Cornwall.

Alternative network provider WarwickNet (CableCom) has today stolen a march on Openreach (BT) by upgrading their own street cabinets to support the latest hybrid-fibre G.fast broadband services with ultrafast download speeds of ‘up to’ 500Mbps (well above Openreach’s 330Mbps peak).

Cityfibre has connected the first public building (Allan’s Primary School) to their new 20km long Gigabit FTTP based Public Service Network (PSN) in the city of Stirling (Scotland), which is part of a £1.7m deal and is being supported by a 7-year contract with ISP MLL Telecom.

Mobile operators O2, Three UK and Vodafone have warned that a recent decision by Ofcom, which prevented them from accessing Openreach’s (BT) existing cable ducts and telegraph poles in order to build new fibre optic backhaul links, could hinder the deployment of future ultrafast 5G Mobile services.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has formally lodged a legal appeal against the matter of Ofcom’s forthcoming 4G / 5G radio spectrum auction in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands. The aim is to stop Three UK’s own challenge from imposing a cap on their ability to bid for a slice of 3.4GHz band.

A new study from business support firm Informi claims to have identified some of top 20 best cities and large towns in the United Kingdom to start a small business, with Ipswich (Suffolk) taking the top spot. Interestingly one of the key criteria is a strong level of access to “ultrafast broadband“.
