Several sources have informed ISPreview that broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media (O2) has today notified staff, specifically those in the Fixed Wholesale and Customer Delivery side of their business, that c.300 of them could be facing redundancy in the near future. The move follows a slowdown in the expansion of their full fibre (FTTP) network via nexfibre.

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today launched a new consultation that sets out their plan to introduce a new code for designated connected TV platforms (e.g. Freely, Android TV, Roku OS, Sky Stream, Virgin Media Horizon etc.), which will require them to ensure that content and services (e.g. iPlayer) from Public Service Broadcasters’ (PSBs) are made “prominent” on their services.

Clevedon-based broadband ISP Glide Group has today announced a new multi-year contract extension with the University of Exeter in Devon (England), which will deliver a “major upgrade” to their wired and wireless internet connectivity – focused upon the educational establishment’s student accommodation estate.

Alternative rural internet provider Voneus, which has deployed a mix of full fibre (FTTP) and wireless (FWA) broadband networks over some of Wales and England’s remote communities, has announced that they will make Netgem TV‘s new IPTV set-top-box and streaming service – PLEIO – available via new TV service bundles. The new kit features support for Freely‘s live UK V streaming service.

A couple of homes in a remote rural area near the village of Llanelidan in Denbighshire (Wales) have been left without access to broadband and internet-connected TV services for nearly six long weeks. The situation began after some nearby overhead lines (poles) were damaged in an unspecified event on 6th December 2025.

Carlisle-based broadband internet provider Grain, which last year secured a £225m funding boost (here) and has so far built their point-to-point full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 270,000 UK premises (aiming to reach 600,000 in the future), has revealed that they’ve begun to deploy their network across the Warwickshire (England) town of Nuneaton; home to around 88,000 people.

Mobile infrastructure company Cornerstone (CTIL), which was originally established as part of a UK network sharing agreement between O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone (Vantage Towers), has awarded construction company United Infrastructure the contract to maintain their national network of 16,000 telecoms (mast) sites.

The SIM-Only mobile operator Spusu, which holds a virtual operator (MVNO) agreement to harness EE’s 4G and 5G network, has today confirmed that they’ve rolled out their free EU roaming to Ukraine and Moldova from 1st January 2026. Customers in the UK who travel to those countries can now use their plans (calls, text and data) as they would at home — with no extra charges.

Network operator EE (BT) has today introduced a new Multi Tech Cover policy, which reflects gadget insurance that offers manufacturer-approved repairs and flexibility for customers wanting to protect an “unlimited” number of eligible devices. Naturally, they’ve accompanied this with the results of a new survey, which found 64% of Brits would prefer a single, affordable policy to cover the majority of their devices.

The Starlink service from SpaceX, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds to the UK and globally via a massive constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), appears to have expanded the availability of their Grok-based AI chatbot to support customers on their website. The service was already added for users of their App a few months ago.

Network testing giant Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net service, have released their latest Q3-Q4 2025 (H2) study into the speed of 5G based mobile broadband networks across the United Kingdom. The results reveal that Three UK continues to be the fastest provider, while O2 (Virgin Media) was the slowest.

European satellite operator Eutelsat has announced that they’ve ordered a further 340 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) broadband satellites for their global OneWeb network from Airbus Defence and Space. This is on top of the planned 100 satellite extension that was previously procured in Dec 2024 (due to for delivery in late 2026); representing a total network expansion of 440 satellites.

We’re playing catch-up today as, toward the latter part of 2025, EE (BT) updated their website (here) to confirm that they intend to “begin closing the 2G network from May 2029“. But as ISPreview reported a year ago (here), the broadband and mobile operator has already begun encouraging some 2G users to upgrade ahead of the closure.

At present it often seems like a new eSIM (Embedded SIM) based mobile operator is launching almost every other week and today it’s the turn of Rewild Mobile, which says they’re “operating on the Three UK & Vodafone network” and intend to put any profits they make back into “rewilding nature“.
