Lit Fibre Engineer Installing FTTP Wall Box

A little over a month has passed since internet provider Lit Fibre, which harnesses CityFibre’s UK full fibre (FTTP) network (they originally ran their own fibre network – here), introduced a range of new “specialised” packages. But they’ve now significantly cut the prices of those same plans “due to market demand“.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has today shared the results from a recent survey they conducted, which examined the coverage and performance of 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) networks – including EE, Three UK, Vodafone and O2 – for people travelling on part of the Elizabeth Line (train) from Heathrow Airport (T 2/3) to Canary Wharf.

Network operator CityFibre, which have so far built their 2.5Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 4.4 million UK premises (4.2m Ready for Service), has today confirmed the completion of their “primary” £58 million build across the large Berkshire (England) town of Reading – including some of its surrounding areas.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has this morning revealed that a total of 50 government-funded rural 4G (mobile broadband) mast upgrades have now gone live across England (9 masts), Wales (28) and Scotland (13) as part of the industry-led £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project. But 50 more will follow by March 2026.

A few years have passed since the South Western Railway (SWR) announced that it would deploy a new rail-side 5G mast network (here), which aimed to deliver “superfast” onboard WiFi for people travelling on a 70km long stretch of their Main Line into London (between Basingstoke and Earlsfield). But after some delays, the new network is now live.

Alternative network provider Wildanet, which has spent the past few years deploying a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based gigabit broadband network across rural parts of Cornwall and Devon in England, has announced plans to conduct a “phased retirement” of their legacy Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to grant SpaceX’s Starlink service “temporary authorisation” to harness the E band frequencies for their mega constellation of compact ultrafast broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The move would expand their backhaul capacity at three gateway earth station sites within the UK.

Clevedon-based business, student and residential ISP Glide Group, which is separately still busy expanding their full fibre broadband network, has today announced that a recent funding boost from banking giant NatWest has enabled it to start preparing for an “ambitious expansion” of its high-speed Wi-Fi connectivity infrastructure too.

State-owned broadband ISP and telecoms operator JT (Jersey Telecom), supported by technology partner Ericsson, have today confirmed that their c. £80 million project to deploy a new 5G based mobile network across Jersey (English Channel Island) has finally started to go live across its first area.

Broadband operator AllPointsFibre Networks (APFN) has today signed a new deal with UK business ISP Onecom, which enables the internet service provider to provide business-grade Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) connections using APFN’s new aquila wholesale platform (an aggregated network using several operators).

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve “significantly” boosted the coverage and network capacity (mobile broadband performance) of their 5G network across Westminster (Central London), which has been achieved through the deployment of 80 new small cells via Ontix.

A little over a year has passed since broadband and telecoms giant BT announced a 10-year project, which aimed to convert a further 2,000 of the operator’s legacy payphones and kiosks – across more than 200 UK towns and cities – into smart Street Hubs, starting this year (here). But objections by some local authorities are starting to mount.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has revealed that they’ve won yet another contract to map 4G and 5G mobile broadband coverage and performance in England, which will this time see them testing along 6,000km of the road network within the four councils covered by the local authority’s Superfast South Yorkshire project.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has notified UK broadband ISPs of a 9-month delay to the planned launch of their new Ethernet Access Direct (EAD) v2.0 product for businesses, which appears to have been prompted by Ofcom’s current Telecoms Access Review 2026 (TAR). The move means that EAD 2 won’t become available until the end of 2026.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT appears to be facing another dispute over workers pay after the Prospect union, which represents a majority of staff at management grades within the UK company, overwhelmingly rejected a “derisory” pay offer from the employer (96% of those who voted elected to reject the offer on turnout of 68%).

In a major shift for one of the UK market’s largest retail ISPs, Sky Broadband has quietly begun introducing a new, albeit not currently cheaper, range of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband packages that harness CityFibre’s alternative national network. Previously, Sky only sold packages via Openreach’s network.

Alternative network ISP CommunityFibre (CF) has finally published – much earlier than before – their full annual accounts to the end of 2024. The results reveal that their 5Gbps speed full (FTTP) broadband network ended the year with a coverage of 1.342 million homes (plus c.200k businesses) and residential customers of 336,000 (25% take-up). But employees fell to 737 (2023: 930).
