The Government’s (DSIT) Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency appears to have published another contract modification notice for UK broadband ISP Wildanet, which will see their £18m state aid funded Project Gigabit broadband roll-out across hard-to-reach rural parts of South West and Central Cornwall (Lot 32.02 and 32.03) being extended.

Openreach has confirmed that their new 1.8Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network has now covered 90% of Northern Ireland, which is up from 87% a year ago. The operator is currently still in the process of investing another £100m to push this figure up to 97% for a total of more than 830,000 homes and businesses (here).

Managed ISP ASK4, which delivers gigabit-capable broadband to students and residents (renters) in multi-tenant buildings across the UK (inc. parts of Europe), has today announced that they’ve acquired ClearFibre – previously part of Elevate (formerly Telcom) – to help their goal of improving internet connectivity in the UK’s Build-to-Rent (BTR) market.

A new report from the cross-industry UK Spectrum Policy Forum (UKSPF), which was conducted in collaboration with consultancy firm Coleago, has examined what might become of the Ultra High Frequency (UHF) spectrum bands after 2034 (currently used for digital TV, PMSE and others). For example, if auctioned to mobile operators, the IMT600 band could raise up to £980m.

Some customers of Sky’s UK pay TV services appear to still be suffering from connectivity problems this morning after the platform suffered a significant service outage late last night, which primarily seemed to impact users of their Sky Q boxes. But Sky has remained frustratingly silent during this outage.

The ITS Technology Group, which has built various open access full fibre broadband and Ethernet networks (“Faster Britain“) across urban parts of the UK for businesses and ISPs, today claims to have “become the first UK provider” to successfully trial the delivery of dedicated internet access services over 50G PON broadband tech (both in the lab and via a live business environment).

Broadband and telecoms giant BT Group has reportedly taken the decision to shift its remaining international business into a new standalone division, which is expected to comprise over 8,000 staff and will report separately from the company’s UK business.

A new newspaper report claims that CityFibre is allegedly engaged in “discussions” with Fern Trading, a subsidiary of Octopus Investments, over the potential acquisition of the Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network built by All Points Fibre Networks (APFN) – itself reflecting an earlier consolidation of Jurassic Fibre, Swish Fibre and Giganet.

Broadband-based live TV streaming service Freely, which is supported by major UK TV broadcasters (BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and 5 etc.) and is designed to be an evolution of the existing Freeview service (inc. Freeview Play and Freesat), has confirmed that they’re finally “considering” the development of a streaming media device.

The Swansea Bay City Deal’s Digital Infrastructure Programme has awarded a £9.8m contract to BT under their Better Broadband Infill Project, which will see Openreach being tasked with rolling out a “full fibre broadband” (FTTP) ISP network to nearly 1,800 hard-to-reach sites across the Swansea Bay City Region.

Broadband and phone provider Virgin Media (O2) has today launched another trial to support their Digital Landline Switchover (DLS) programme (i.e. migrating old analogue landline phones to IP-based services), which this time focuses on giving support to telecare users in Cardiff (Wales) in order to help them make the switch.

Hull-based alternative UK network operator MS3, which has deployed their full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network across 234,000 premises (207k RFS) in the North of England and connected 18,000 customers (mostly in the Hull and Humber region), appears to have returned to life after suffering a major service outage yesterday. But some users may need to reboot their routers.

SpaceX has proposed that its Starlink service, which offers ultrafast broadband speeds to the UK and beyond via a mega constellation of compact satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), can offer Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) solutions to complement GPS. This would meet the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) desire for an alternative to GPS.

A new report claims that debt-laden Telefonica SA is allegedly drawing up plans that would enable them to take control of the 50/50 UK Joint Venture (JV) that it owns with Liberty Global, which reflects broadband and mobile provider Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2). In addition, they also have another JV with InfraVia Capital Partners to build a new fibre network in the UK (nexfibre).

A new report has revealed how much Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband coverage exists across the top 15 National Parks in England, Scotland and Wales. Overall the top performing park was found to be the Yorkshire Dales (57.05%), while on the flip side Loch Lomond and The Trossachs (28.23%) delivered the weakest coverage.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has this morning announced that they’ve connected, as part of their state aid funded contracts via the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit scheme, the first remote rural premises in 38 different locations across the UK to their new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

The Broadband Forum, which is an industry-driven global standards development organisation, has begun a new project that aims to help broadband ISPs improve their customer satisfaction, both in the UK and around the world, by providing them with the tools to “more accurately assess the end-user experience with the applications they use“.
