Mobile Networks Call on Gov to Help Bring 5G Upgrades to 6,200 UK Sites

The Mobile Infrastructure Forum (MIF), which represents the main providers of mobile network infrastructure for EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK (i.e. Cellnex UK, Cornerstone, MBNL and WIG), has today called on the government to resolve the issue of 6,200 UK sites (masts etc.) that are “stuck in legislative limbo” and preventing 5G upgrades.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), prompted by a complaint from rival mobile operator EE (BT), has banned two website adverts for Vodafone after the watchdog found that it had made “misleading” savings claims and the packages did not return to the prices against which the savings were being claimed once the promotions ended.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today ordered mobile operator EE (BT) to ensure that the “unlimited data” (mobile broadband) claims on their website, which apply to various 4G and 5G mobile plans, are directly qualified with the limits expressed in their associated Fair Usage Policy (FUP).

Vodafone Top 1.61 Million UK Broadband Customers as Mobile Declines

Mobile network operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q4 FY25 financial results, which confirms that their fixed line broadband base grew by a healthy 61,000 in the last quarter to total 1.61 million customers (down from 72k added in Q3 2024). But their mobile base fell again to total 18.175m (down by -125k in Q4 vs -174k in Q3).

Business telecommunications and UK broadband ISP Spitfire has today called on Openreach (BT) to provide “much needed clarity” for service providers, and the businesses they support, on new contracts related to the looming switch-off of the old Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in favour of IP-based digital phone (VoIP etc.) services.

Broadband and Mobile Traffic Volume Growth Has Slowed to a Crawl

A new report from analyst firm Enders Analysis, which was recently shared with ISPreview, has revealed that broadband traffic volume growth across most developed countries has “slowed to a relative crawl” to become the “new normal” (i.e. falling from 30%+ for many years and now at 10-15%). The story is similar for mobile (4G, 5G etc.) services (falling to 5-10%).

The group, which said they were challenging the “financial, mental, and physical impacts of the retail giant’s “irrational” business decisions“, today reported that their attempt to mediate a solution “has come to an end with no resolution“.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today informed ISPreview that they’ve finally resolved a nasty security issue with their 4G based Voice-over-LTE service (VoLTE or 4G Calling), which effectively made it possible for customers of the operator’s network to have their location tracked by almost anybody with access to their mobile number.

Grain Puts FTTP Broadband Network Live in Saltburn, North Yorkshire

Alternative network builder and UK ISP Grain (Grain Connect) has announced that their new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has gone live in the North Yorkshire (England) seaside town of Saltburn (Saltburn-by-the-Sea), which is home to around 6,000 people.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT is reportedly in “advanced talks” to sell its 50% stake in UK TV broadcaster TNT Sports, which was formerly known as BTSport before the operator retreated from pay TV. Existing partner Warner Bros Discovery would pick up the stake and use it to help support their plans for a new streaming service (yes.. another one, sigh).

Alternative Broadband Operator FullFibre Cuts Jobs Post Zzoomm Merger

Alternative UK network operator FullFibre Limited (Fibre Heroes), which in early March 2025 completed its merger with Zzoomm (here), has in the past few weeks begun to notify staff of further redundancies. Most of the cuts appear to be coming from their internal fibre build and supporting teams, and this also extends to some senior leadership levels.

Satellite operator Viasat and German car manufacturer BMW claim to have demonstrated the ability for vehicles to connect over satellite (non-terrestrial networks) for emergency messaging and hazard warnings. This is designed to complement modern terrestrial 4G and 5G mobile network connectivity solutions (many cars already have something akin to the latter).

Openreach Doc Hints at XGS-PON FTTP Plan for 3.3Gbps UK Broadband

Network operator Openreach (BT) recently published the first edition of a new Suppliers Trial Information Note (STIN) for Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband using 10Gbps capable XGS-PON technology, which interestingly appeared to hint at a series of new speed tiers. This includes symmetric speeds of 2.5Gbps and 3.3Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The High Court in London has rejected an application by mobile operator EE (BT) for interim injunctive relief against satellite provider Avanti Broadband, which had “threatened to withdraw” its backhaul services – used to help supply data capacity to some of the remotest rural UK mast sites – unless the mobile operator agreed to pay a “substantially increased rate“.
