A new cost-of-living study conducted by market research firm Maru, which polled 40,000 UK adults at multiple touchpoints over three years to date, claims to have found that 53% of respondents thought it was “likely” that they would need to consider changing their home broadband in order to cut costs. A further 52% said the same for their mobile phone plan.

Alternative network operator and ISP Grain has today announced that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has grown to cover 250,000 UK premises (up from 220k in May 2024) and 43,000 customers (up from 30,000). But crucially, they also did as expected (here) and went EBITDA positive during the quarter ended March 2025.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Edinburgh-based UK alternative broadband network operator and ISP GoFibre, Neil Conaghan, has now quietly also been named as the Interim CEO of network provider Wildanet – they’re doing something similar to GoFibre, albeit at the other end of the United Kingdom.

The UK telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, has today opened a new investigation into call centre solutions’ provider Primo Dialler, which will examine “concerns that numbers sub-allocated to [the company] are/were being misused, including to facilitate scams.”

Broadband ISP Lit Fibre, which now harnesses CityFibre’s national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (they originally ran their own UK fibre network – here), has refreshed their existing range of packages and also introduced new a range of “specialised” product packages called ‘Lit Ultimate’, ‘Lit Homeworker’, ‘Lit Family’ and ‘Lit Gamer’.

In a somewhat unsurprising development, newspaper reports have today claimed that Vodafone and Three UK (CK Hutchison) may be gearing up to support their merger by discussing the launch of a new Pay TV service. Such products are typically sold as part of a bundle (convergence), such as alongside fixed broadband, phone and mobile plans.

Alternative network ISP Fastr Broadband (formerly UK Fibre Networks) has today announced that they’ve completed the roll-out of their new Adtran powered and 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the city centre of York (England), which they claim has put them within reach of 8,000 local homes and businesses.

New customers looking to join one of Virgin Media’s broadband and TV bundles may like to know that the ISP has recently made some further hardware updates, which means that all TV packages now include a Hub 5 router (Flex ‘service’ is excluded). Previously, some bundles still included older routers, like the now somewhat dated Hub 3.

Researchers from the Universities of Bristol and Cambridge claim to have demonstrated the UK’s “first long-distance ultra-secure transfer of data over a quantum communications network” using “standard [single-mode] fibre optic infrastructure“. The test successfully transmitted a live quantum-secured video call over a distance of 410km (between Bristol and Cambridge).

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today warned that they’re still seeing “significant inbound roaming traffic” on their legacy 2G and 3G networks in the UK. This comes ahead of their rapidly approaching plan to withdraw the service from 1st October 2025.

The LSBUD (Line Search Before You Dig) organisation, which offers an online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms for underground pipes and cables, has said that Northern Ireland’s underground pipes and cables will be “safer than ever before” after Virgin Media (O2) and Mutual Energy joined their platform.

This morning we reported on how ISP BT (EE) had updated their website to change their low-cost home broadband social tariffs for those on state benefits (Home Essentials). The changes saw the removal of their £15 per month 36Mbps “fibre” plan for those with “no income” on 1st May 2025 and some price rises. But BT has now reversed this, saying they were “changed in error“.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has revealed more details about how they’re harnessing their UK mobile network to provide more accurate rain “nowcasting” (i.e. short-term forecast of rainfall – from a few minutes to a few hours ahead). This is supported by the River Severn Partnership’s Advanced Wireless Innovation Region (RSPAWIR) and Wireless DNA.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has informed ISPs that they’ll be able to take advantage of free (connection charge) “Proactive FTTP Upgrades” for migrations to Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband speeds of 80Mbps (20Mbps upload) and above from 7th May 2025. This may or may not get passed on to related consumers.
