Mobile operator Three UK has warned consumers to be extra cautious around the festive season due to a significant increase in fraudsters targeting mobile users. The operator noted how, at the same time last year, their network tracked a 300% increase in scams around Black Friday and a 500% uptick in fraud or SMS-based scams reported over Christmas.

Network builder and broadband ISP FibreNest, which is the Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) operator for new build UK housing sites by Persimmon Homes, has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve begun to trial a new 900Mbps speed package for homes on “selected sites” (previously their fastest package was only 500Mbps).

The Scottish Government (SG) has revealed that nearly every home and business in Papa Westray, on the remote archipelago of Orkney, now has access to faster broadband speeds. This is after contractor CloudNet used the community-owned water authority’s existing infrastructure (pipes used for drinking water) to run new fibre optic cables.

A new survey from service management firm Totalmobile has claimed that alternative UK providers of fibre broadband networks (altnets) are “facing significant operational challenges,” with 53% said to be reporting a lack of day-to-day control over their field operations.

The BT Group has today published their latest biannual H1 FY25 results to Sept 2024, which reveals that Openreach’s UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added 2.1 million premises to their coverage in H1 to cover 15.9m, while EE’s 5G mobile coverage increased to 80% of the population (up from 75% in H2 FY24). The fibre build rate has also been accelerated again.

Broadband network operator nexfibre, which shares some of their parentage with UK ISP partner Virgin Media (O2), has announced that they’ve extended their 2Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network to cover 9,000 additional homes in the Essex (England) city of Chelmsford.

Network operator FullFibre Limited (Fibre Heroes), which has already built their open access Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 380,000 UK premises, has today announced that ISP Gigabit IQ have made their broadband services and internet security features – FamilyGuard and CyberGuard – available over the network.

After launching their commercial 5G Standalone (SA) mobile network during February 2024 (here), O2 (Virgin Media) has today followed that up by claiming to have become the “first UK operator to switch on 5G standalone small cells“. Customers in Birmingham city centre will be the first to benefit from the faster mobile broadband kit (up to 300Mbps).

Low-cost mobile operator iD Mobile (Currys), which harnesses Three UK’s national 4G and 5G network via a virtual operator (MVNO) partnership, has today celebrated another significant milestone by reaching a total of 2 million subscribers (up by 488,000 in the year) and ahead of its original projections.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has announced that engineers working for alternative UK broadband networks (altnets) have finally gained a limited ability to replace existing copper drop wires with fibre optic lines on their telecoms poles. Previously, altnets had to wait on the incumbent’s own engineers before this work could be done.

The deal also signals the start of their pledge to invest £48m into building a new “world-class” 5G mobile network across the islands.

Alternative UK broadband ISP Connexin has today issued a short progress update to state that they’re about to enter the build phase on their £58.6m (state aid funded) Project Gigabit contract for rural parts of Nottinghamshire and West Lincolnshire (Lot 10), which aims to expand their full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 34,320 hard to reach premises.

The Competition and Markets Authority has today appeared to give a “provisional” approval to Vodafone and Three UK’s recently tabled commitments (here) under their proposed merger (here), which were intended to placate concerns that the deal could result in a “Significant Lessening of Competition” (SLC) in the mobile market. But it will require changes.
