Ofcom has today published several new documents on their efforts to make more radio spectrum available for use by satellite broadband services, which includes an update on their plan to release part of the 28GHz band, a proposal to make spectrum in the Q, V and E bands available and a proposal to grant Kepler an earth station licence.

But access is currently still working for those trying to access the service via the App or third-party email clients, such as Outlook Express and Thunderbird etc.

The latest contract awarded under the UK government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme – worth £18.8 million – has today gone to ISP Wessex Internet, which will upgrade connectivity for “around” 14,500 hard-to-reach homes and businesses across rural parts of South Wiltshire in England.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today finalised new rules – due to be enforced from 1st October 2024 – that will require mobile network operators, such as Three UK, Vodafone, EE and O2 (inc. MVNO operators), to protect consumers who travel abroad from mobile BILL SHOCKS on data (broadband), call and text charges.

Network provider Freedom Fibre, which has deployed a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 285,000 UK premises (21st Dec 2023) – mostly in the North West of England, has today announced that Cumbria-based wholesale connectivity provider IP River have joined their network.

The UK Government has today proposed a series of recommendations to help “bolster the resilience” of the 999 emergency call handling system, which is operated by BT, following a technical fault (“complex software issue”) last summer (here) that resulted in 11,470 unique emergency calls being “unsuccessfully connected“.

Mobile operator Three UK has this morning published their annual financial results, which reveals that over 4,700 sites (up from 4,250 last year) across 650 towns and cities are now live with 5G and the average data (mobile broadband) usage per customer has reached 30 GigaBytes per month (up by 19.52% from 25.1GB).

A new survey of residents in housing schemes across Hastings (East Sussex), which was jointly conducted by altnet ISP Lightning Fibre, the Orbit Housing Association and the Complete Technology Group, has revealed a “stark lack of awareness” of what full fibre broadband is (51% had little to no understanding and 87% of residents wanted to learn more about it).

The FTTH Council Europe has today published their 2024 ranking of 39 European countries (EU39) with the strongest take-up and growth of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISP networks, which sees the UK rise several places in the ranking and a prediction that we’ll hit 29.6 million homes passed by 2029 (up from 17.1m today).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that more than 13,000 additional homes and businesses in the Cathedral City of York (North Yorkshire, England) can now access their new 2Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which was made possible by nexfibre’s network expansion.

Broadband operator Netomnia (YouFibre) has revealed that their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which recently covered 850,000 UK premises (up from 730k in Nov 2023), is currently planned to reach 1.5 million premises next year. But they also hold a tentative ambition to push that up to 2 million by the end of 2025.
