Up to 38,000 workers at national broadband and communications giant BT (including Openreach) are today beginning day one of their two-day national strike over pay (the first one since 1987), with the second due to take place on Monday next week. So far, BT has shown no sign of giving in to the pressure.

Sky UK (Sky TV, Sky Broadband) appears to have quietly taken the beta tag off their popular Sky Go video streaming app for Apple TV devices, which means that regular customers of their Pay TV service should now be able to download and use it.

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has today announced that they’ve reached the halfway point of their commitment to connect 1 million people, specifically those who are “experiencing digital exclusion“, by the end of 2022. Some 500,000 free mobile data (broadband) and calling SIMs have now been donated to the public.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have published their joint Q2 2022 results, which saw fixed broadband reach 5,612,000 customers (up by 16,000 in Q2 2022 vs -1K in Q1) and their FTTP coverage reach another 114,000 premises. The fixed line network now covers 15.9m premises (54% of UK).

The BT Group has published their Q1 2022/23 results to June 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 7.957 million premises (up by a record of 763K in the quarter vs 752K last quarter). Meanwhile, EE’s 5G network now reaches 55% of the UK population.

Network builders and broadband ISPs in the UK have confirmed that they’re also being affected by a shortage in optical fibre cables, which has caused significant delays to lead times on deliveries and pushed up prices of such cables by as much as 70% since March 2021. But contrary to some reports, the cable cost is not the main issue.

Connectivity Services provider Aqua Comms has announced the completion of their work to deploy the Celtix-Connect 2 subsea fibre optic cable, which now runs between Ireland (Dublin), the Isle of Man and England (Blackpool). The move means more resilient and faster broadband for premises on the isle.

But rival Three UK is threatening to pull ahead in 5G.

Residents in the large Fife (Scotland, UK) village of East Wemyss have succeeded in petitioning Openreach (BT) to remove several of its recently deployed telegraph poles. The poles were built to help bring full fibre (FTTP) broadband to the area, but locals found them “obtrusive” and feared the value of their homes might suffer.

A new study of 1,500 London based pensioners, which was conducted by Perspectus Global in July 2022 and commissioned by Age UK and ISP CommunityFibre, has claimed that 43% of those over the age of 60 are “struggling to pay for internet access” via broadband and mobile data services as a result of the cost-of-living crisis.
