Hyperoptic Engineer over Chamber 2022

City-focused gigabit broadband ISP Hyperoptic has today announced a key milestone after their “full fibre” (FTTP/B) network connected over 100,000 new build UK homes, with agreements in place to connect a further 100,000 new build properties over the next 12-months. The operator has now covered a total of over 900,000 premises.

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear, which is building a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 500,000 premises in England by the end of 2023 (300,000 completed), has been awarded Path to Collaboration (PTC) by Openreach (BT) – a move that should help to boost their rollout.

Kent-based UK ISP Vfast (Orbital Net) has announced that they’ve finally connected their first customer – Paul from Gillingham – to CityFibre’s new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Medway, which follows last year’s announcement (here) of their plan to join the platform.

The endless debate over the UK government’s bloated and incoherent Online Safety Bill (OSB) took another twist today after the Open Rights Group (ORG) pointed out that two of the largest broadband ISPs, Virgin Media (VMO2) and TalkTalk, were blocking access to MP Penny Mordaunt’s website as “unsuitable for children“.

Some customers of business-focused UK mobile data (broadband) operator Anvil Mobile have been hit by a new exploit, which hijacks end-user routers and then proceeds to spew out cyber-attacks. The result is a compromised network and large data bill, but customers on other operators may also be affected.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has today, after BT rejected this week’s last minute talks proposal to reach a compromise agreement over pay, said they will formally serve notice on the UK telecoms and broadband ISP giant (inc. Openreach) of their intention to launch the first national strike in 35 years.

The North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) has been allocated £16.89 million over three years – April 2022 to March 2025 – from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF), which they say will be spent on everything from “a lack of broadband coverage to poor rural transport links“.

Telecoms and UK broadband giant BT has today announced that it plans to grow its “in-house Digital talent” resource to 6,300 people (up from 3,500 at 1st April 2022). The majority will be brought on board by April 2024, but only around 1,000 of the new colleagues will come from the UK and the rest (1,800) will be recruited in India.
