UPD ASA Slap TalkTalk Broadband Speed Checker over Misleading Estimates

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld a complaint by one of TalkTalk’s UK customers against a broadband speed checking facility on the ISPs website, which was found to deliver a “misleading” estimates of expected performance because it didn’t go far enough to make clear that the speed consumers received was “likely to be lower than the estimated” range.

Ofcom UK Calls on BT and TalkTalk to Improve Broadband Speed Information

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today released the results from its latest mystery shopping research, which was designed to assess ISP compliance with the regulators Voluntary Code of Practice on Broadband Speeds. The study found that ISPs provided a speed estimate to consumers, without prompting, in 59% of all calls (rising to 93% after prompting, which is up from 85% in 2010).

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national UK telecoms infrastructure, has confirmed its intention to begin offering the “fastest wholesale broadband speeds currently available” via a new “premium” 330Mbps (Megabits per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service from 11th June 2012. The first pricing and a new 220Mbps option have also been revealed.

Shetland Telecom, which was established by the Shetland Islands Council (SIC) to help deliver superfast broadband services across 90% of the remote Shetland Islands (North of Scotland, UK) by March 2016, has successfully connected its first “test customers” to the link in the form of two cute Puffins (Tammie and Norie).

UPD2 Report Lists Top 10 Legitimate Sites Blocked by UK Adult Content Filters

The Open Rights Group (ORG) and the LSE Media Policy Project have today published a new report that examines the impact of internet censorship on mobile networks and list some of the legitimate websites that often get unfairly blocked by adult content filters (aka – over-blocking). The study is important because similar measures could soon be forced upon fixed line broadband ISP subscribers.

New Video Shows 1Gbps B4RN Broadband Network in Lancashire Being Built

The B4RN (Broadband 4 Rural North) project, which recently began work on a new service that aims to connect thousands of rural homes in northern Lancashire UK via a unique 1Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable FTTH broadband ISP network (here), has posted a lovely new video of their fibre optic infrastructure being built.

O2 UK First to Introduce Cheaper Mobile Internet EU Roaming Rates

Telecoms operator O2 UK (Telefonica) has become the country’s first mobile network to announced cheaper prices for using your mobile phone or Mobile Broadband connection while roaming abroad within the EU, which reflects Europe’s new roaming regulation for voice, text (sms) messages and data charges (New EU Roaming Rules).

ISP O2 UK and BE See Slower Decline to 617800 Broadband Subscribers

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (Telefonica) has today released its latest quarterly results to the end of March (Q1-2012), which revealed that their fixed line broadband subscriber base (includes BE Broadband customers) had continued to decline by -2,500 (net) between Q4-2011 and Q1-2012 to reach a new total of 617,800.

BT Retire 20CN IPStream Connect Broadband Services at 425 UK Exchanges

BT has informed UK ISPs that its legacy broadband retirement programme will, from November 2012, stop accepting new provide orders for its older 20CN based IPStream Connect products (e.g. mostly up to 8Mbps ADSL technology); albeit only at telephone exchanges where the latest 21CN based Wholesale Broadband Connect (WBC) solution exists as an alternative.

Spectrum Interactive Offer FREE Wireless Internet in London with a Catch

Europe Finally Approves Cheaper Mobile Broadband Roaming from July 2012

The European Parliament (EC) has today voted unanimously (578 in favour, 10 opposing and 10 abstentions) to adopt new rules that, effective from 1st July 2012 (all EU Member States), will make it significantly cheaper to surf the internet from your Mobile Broadband connection while roaming abroad within the EU. The price of mobile voice calls and text (SMS) messages will also fall.

UK Dominates European Mobile Web Traffic as World Usage Triples

Website monitoring service Pingdom has used data from StatCounter to reveal that mobile web traffic (internet) worldwide, such as that which comes from Mobile Broadband and Smartphone connections, has almost tripled over the past two years. The UK was also found to have the highest share of mobile traffic, as part of total web traffic, in Europe at 10.71%.

ISP BT Top 6.28M Broadband Customers as FTTC Passes 10M UK Homes

National UK telecoms giant BT has released its latest results to 31st March (Q1-2012), which saw their retail broadband ISP subscriber base add +136,000 customers (down from +146k in Q4-2011) to hit a total of 6,280,000. Elsewhere its FTTC superfast broadband service has now passed 10 million homes and businesses (almost 40% of the country), well ahead of their original Q4-2012 target.
