The CCO of the Complete Technology Group (CTG), Kevin Monaghan, has criticised today’s Spring Budget 2024 announcement for both failing to “crackdown” on broadband ISPs “inflicting substantial mid-contract price hikes” on consumers and not announcing any new provisions to help upgrade digital infrastructure.

Energy and telecoms provider UW (Utility Warehouse), which is also known as Telecom Plus, has today announced that the company has passed the “one million customer milestone” and are now setting their sights on “doubling in size to two million customers” (no timescale for this was given).

The Conservative MP for Beverley and Holderness, Graham Stuart, has followed up his previous calls for the UK government to clampdown on the use of “ugly and unnecessary” poles – used to deploy some gigabit broadband networks – by sending a letter to the Digital Infrastructure Minister, Julia Lopez, which makes five key “demands“.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned another advert for UK fixed wireless broadband ISP 6G Internet (IX Wireless), albeit this time for sending out a “misleading” leaflet promotion that claimed the provider offered “Full Fibre Speed Broadband” (Full Fibre is a term that’s typically only be used by FTTP networks).

Oxfordshire-based alternative network provider and ISP Zzoomm, which originally aimed to cover 1 million premises with their FTTP broadband network across 85 UK towns by the end of 2025, has today notified ISPreview that “new network construction is stopping” (some existing work will continue) and redundancies are expected.

Budget internet provider TalkTalk has today announced the appointment of Susie Buckridge as the CEO of their consumer business. The previous CEO, Adam Dunlop, will be “stepping down … to pursue other opportunities outside the group” – Adam was promoted to the position in March 2023 and retained it during the group’s demerger (here).

Telecoms giant BT has today announced that they’ve secured a state-aid supported £26m contract under the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit programme, which will see them connect over 650 primary schools in hard-to-reach (rural) places across England with gigabit broadband using full fibre technology.

Mobile network operator giffgaff has today launched a cheaper 18-month “Good Contract” unlimited data (mobile broadband) tariff, which is now available for only £25 per month (previously £35). The update also benefits more than 12,000 existing customers on the old plan, automatically reducing their bills by £10 a month.

SpaceX boss Elon Musk has conducted another live test of Starlink’s future global Direct to Cell (DtC) mobile roaming service using a regular unmodified Android-based Samsung smartphone, which managed to deliver a 4G based mobile broadband download speed of 15.6Mbps to 17.2Mbps.

Trade body Mobile UK, which represents Three UK, EE (BT), O2 (VMO2) and Vodafone, has made a last minute plea for the government to use this week’s Spring Budget to introduce changes that would foster a more “positive investment environment” for mobile operators and thus boost their network upgrades.

Customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) are reporting that a recent firmware update to their Hub 5 (Sagemcom F3896LG-VMB) router, which has the version number of LG-RDK_7.6.15-2306.5, appears to have caused the device’s sole 2.5Gbps network (LAN) port to stop functioning correctly.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet has furnished ISPreview with a small update on their efforts to make their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages available – nationwide – across CityFibre’s entire UK network, which was previously due to complete at the end of 2023.

Network builder and ISP Brsk, which is deploying a gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the Midlands of England and beyond (rollout plan), have informed ISPreview that their coverage has grown to pass 450,000 homes (up from 358,000 on 10th Nov 2023). Customer take-up has also increased.

The move, which was announced last year, will bring to end a service that has been running since as far back as 1880. But these days, the vast majority of people use services like Google to find what they want.
