BT and CityFibre Scoop 2024 RoSPA Awards for Health and Safety

Telecoms and broadband giants CityFibre and BT have both scooped up wins at this year’s annual Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Awards 2024 event. CityFibre secured the Gold Achievement Award for its third consecutive year (four if you include lower awards) and BT won the Industry Sector Award for ‘Information & Communication’.

Openreach Update as Analogue UK Phone Switch Off Delayed to 2027 UPDATE

In case anybody missed it after being buried in yesterday’s BT results (here). The plan to withdraw BT and Openreach’s old copper-based analogue line services (PSTN phones and WLR), which was due to complete by December 2025, has been delayed until 31st January 2027 in order to give broadband ISPs, telecare providers and consumers more time to adapt.

Bolton Council Take Enforcement Action Against IX Wireless Broadband Poles

The Bolton Council in Greater Manchester (England) has revealed that they’re taking enforcement action against broadband network operator IX Wireless, which is accused of installing antenna equipment on their pole (mast) erections without consultation or consent from the local authority.

London Internet Exchange Sees Record UK Traffic of 9.5Tbps

Internet traffic travelling across the London Internet Exchange (LINX), which excludes data being passed by private interconnection (PI), reached a new record peak of 9.5Tbps (Terabits per second) on the Tuesday 14th May 2024 at around 8:25pm this week.

Connectivity Problems in Telford After Openreach Network Attacked

An unspecified number of Openreach’s broadband ISP and phone customers, including some Ethernet links, appear to have been disrupted in the Shropshire (England) town of Telford after the operator’s network was “badly damaged” in an attack. The operator informs that this “attack” is not being linked to cable theft.

BT Group Grows FTTP to 13.81m UK Premises as Openreach Picked for Project Gigabit

The latest BT Group H2 FY24 results to March 2024 reveal that Openreach’s UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network added 1 million premises to their coverage in the quarter to cover 13.812m, while EE’s 5G mobile covers 75% of the population (up from 72% in H1), the PSTN (analogue phone) migration won’t complete until Jan 2027 and Openreach is named “preferred bidder” for Type C Project Gigabit contracts.

BT to Close Enniskillen Contact Centre with Loss of 300 Jobs

Telecoms and broadband giant BT has announced that, as part of their ongoing UK programme to modernise and consolidate the number of offices they have, they’ve decided to close their Enniskillen Contact Centre in Northern Ireland. The move is expected to result in the loss of around 300 jobs from the site.

Community Fibre Offers Free 50Mbps Broadband to Eligible Londoners

Network builder and UK ISP CommunityFibre, which runs a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across London, as well as parts of Surrey and West Sussex, has today joined forces with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to provide “free access to 100% full fibre broadband” to eligible Londoners struggling to get online.

O2 Deploys 150th 4G Mobile Site Under UK Shared Rural Network

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) has today revealed that they’ve now rolled out enhanced 4G (mobile broadband) coverage across 150 rural sites (up from 100 in mid-Feb 2024) as part of their commitment under the £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) project, which aims to extend geographic 4G cover (aggregate) to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025.

Sources have informed ISPreview that the Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency has decided to extend the availability of their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS) to include urban areas. The scheme has, until now, only offered grants to help rural properties get a 1Gbps capable ISP connection installed.

New SSID Confusion Attack Exploits General WiFi Vulnerability

Network security researchers have published details of a new vulnerability that arises from a “design flaw” in the IEEE 802.11 WiFi standard (CVE-2023-52424), which is said to impact “all operating systems and WiFi clients” and allows an attacker to trick Wi-Fi clients into connecting to an untrusted network.

Vodafone Grow UK Broadband to 1.38 Million Users as Mobile Hits 18.64M

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today published their Q4 FY24 financial results, which saw their fixed broadband base grow to total 1.383 million customers (up by 52k in Q4 vs 39k in the Q3) and their mobile base reach a total of 18.638 million (up by 66k in Q4 vs 330k in Q3).

4G Mobile Cover Extended to More of the UK London Underground

Mobile network operators can now deploy 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) connectivity across more stations and tube lines on the London Underground, which comes after the ongoing network roll-out was extended to include Paddington, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf and Woolwich on the Elizabeth line.
