Digital Infrastructure Engineer up Pole

A new UK network operator with the imaginative title of Digital Infrastructure (DI) has today announced that they’ve partnered with Aberla Utilities as part of a 5-year contract to deliver Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband across around 38,000 homes in the Cheshire town of Crewe. But they’ll face more than a little competition.

A complaint raised by rival mobile operator Vodafone has today resulted in the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) banning two TV adverts for Three UK, one of which “misleadingly” claimed to offer the “UK’s fastest 5G network” (broadband speed) and the other claimed they were the only “real 5G” operator.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that they’re rolling out a new machine learning (ML) algorithm across their UK and pan-European mobile network(s), which has been designed with support from Nokia’s Bell Labs R&D division to “detect and correct anomalies [in their network] before they impact customers.”

A new Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP called WeLink Communications UK has recently begun inviting homes and businesses in the city of Edinburgh (Scotland) to pre-register for their new “Wireless Fibre” service, which claims it will be the first such provider to offer symmetric speeds of up to 1Gbps in Britain.

More than a year has passed since CityFibre, supported by civil engineering firm J. McCann & Co Ltd, began the £45m rollout (here) of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in the city of Derby (Derbyshire, England). The good news is that the first customers are finally going live.

UK ISP Giganet (M12 Solutions) has today announced that they’re moving to adopt short 30-day contract terms on their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband services, although this only applies to those they either build themselves or sell via CityFibre’s national UK network (i.e. Openreach based products aren’t covered).

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has begun testing a new “ubiquitous communications” technology in Cornwall (South West England), which has the capability to instantly switch between 5G mobile and satellite broadband if one network becomes unavailable, thus allowing devices to stay connected continuously while on the move.

The UK Government will today launch a new consultation on ‘Reforming Competition and Consumer Policy’, which among other things promises several new protection measures that could also be extended to help “tackle consumer rip-offs and bad business practices” in the broadband ISP and mobile (telecoms) sector.

Shropshire-based UK ISP Exascale has confirmed that the first customers on their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the large West Midlands market town of West Bromwich have finally started to connect, which follows the start of their local rollout (here) in February 2021.

UK ISP Zzoomm has today confirmed that their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network will next be expanded into the Berkshire (England) towns of Sandhurst and Crowthorne. The rollout is expected to cover 10,500 homes and businesses in the two locations.

The Manchester-based British Cables Company (BCC), which is a manufacturer of various cables, has secured a key multi-million pound contract to supply Openreach with a variety of fibre optic cables to support their ongoing UK rollout of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband and Ethernet services.

UK ISP Cuckoo has today announced that they’ll soon be launching their first Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband package(s), complete with speeds of up to 1Gbps (Gigabits per second), from October 2021. But unlike most other providers, they’ll do so on a monthly rolling contract.

Ofcom UK has today set out their future spectrum management strategy for the next ten years, which among other things aims to boost support for localised spectrum access (e.g. creating local wireless networks via 5G etc.) and promote greater sharing of existing spectrum in higher frequencies.

An unofficial new website has launched that offers a rough overview of the average (mean) broadband ISP speeds being delivered across the world by SpaceX’s new Starlink constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. Apparently, users in Europe are currently experiencing faster speeds than those in the USA, but the sample size is small.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has warned customers of their home broadband service to take extra care with their routers during the summer heatwave because if it “gets too hot” then your connection may “slow down” or even “grind to a halt all together,” said the provider in a new common sense style tips notice.

Full fibre UK ISP Grain Connect, which is supported by £10m from Albion Capital, has started to extend their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to existing homes in North East Lincolnshire (England). The first location to benefit is the large coastal town of Grimsby.
