Sometimes, less is more, or at least that’s the idea behind BT (EE) and Nokia’s latest trials of 5G Reduced Capability (RedCap) technology and devices at the operator’s Adastral Park site in Ipswich (England). RedCap is a technology introduced in 3GPP Release 17 that brings 5G to devices that do not require its full capabilities.

Bromsgrove-based JET Connectivity, which was spun out from JET Engineering Services and develops 5G (wireless broadband) mesh communications for the marine environment, has launched the “world’s first permanently deployable 5G floating base station” (cell tower) in Grimsby to help connect an operational offshore wind farm.

Customers of UK mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone, specifically those taking their original Pro Broadband (Pro 1) package for homes, have been informed that the included WiFi booster device will soon lose the use of its built-in Alexa voice assistant. This is because the new home broadband app they’re planning to launch doesn’t support it.

Network operator IX Wireless, which is building a new UK fibre-fed fixed wireless broadband network – supported by ISP 6Gi (not related to 6G mobile technology), appears close to expanding their existing roll-out into Tameside (Greater Manchester) after it applied to Oldham council for 29 poles to be installed, each 15 metres high.

Aberdeen-based UK broadband and I.T solutions provider Internet for Business (IFB) has secured a new contract worth £300,000 that will see them support and deliver the rollout of a new full fibre network in the Scottish city, which aims to bring multi-gigabit speeds to 50 key Aberdeen City Council (ACC) education locations.

Openreach (BT) has released the next batch of 28 UK exchanges under Tranche 14 of their “FTTP Priority Exchange Stop Sell” project, which reflects locations where over 75% of premises are able to get full fibre broadband and can thus stop selling copper based phone and broadband products (i.e. FTTP becomes the only product available).

Mobile network operator O2 (VMO2) has today refreshed some of their SIM Only “Pay As You Go” mobile plans (Big Bundles), which sees a number of their plans getting a data allowance (mobile broadband) boost for no extra cost. The £15 for 25GB “Rolling Plan” has also been boosted to 30GB, although the rest of their Rolling Plans are unchanged.
