The surge in UK inflation is threatening to result in one of the biggest annual price hikes in broadband ISP, phone, mobile and calling charges seen in years, which could hit customers of BT, EE, Plusnet, Vodafone, O2, TalkTalk, Shell Energy, KCOM and others with rises of around 9% come March-April 2022 (double the usual level).

Openreach (BT) has kindly provided ISPreview.co.uk with some new network traffic data, which shows the average monthly UK data consumption of broadband users across their network for the past 13-months – from September 2020 to October 2021. Interestingly, traffic actually declined through the spring and summer.

Mobile operator Smarty has this week started to inform their UK customers that they’ll finally get around to switching-on an ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) service during the “early 2022” period, although an exact date has yet to be revealed.

The Shropshire County Council (SCC) in England has this week allocated another £1 million (total so far of £2m) to help boost the value of the Government’s local rural gigabit broadband vouchers, which now offers grants worth up to £4,000 (homes) or £7,000 (small businesses) to cover the costs of installing such a network.

CityFibre UK has today confirmed that their £32m rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the South Yorkshire town of Barnsley, which was disrupted after the collapse of their previous contractor NMCN (here), will now be conducted by Svella Connect.

Openreach (BT) has announced a new round of price increases for UK broadband ISPs and phone providers that take their Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) product, which forms part of their transition to gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) lines and the plan to stop selling WLR from September 2023 (full withdrawal by Dec 2025).

Vodafone UK has today launched their first 5G based MiFi device, which is essentially a small battery powered (lasting up to 8.5 hours) mobile broadband router that can connect up to 32 devices via the WiFi 6 standard. Customers can select either a fixed term or rolling contract, with unlimited data prices starting from £15 per month.

Nintendo has won another injunction in the High Court, which forces most of the largest UK broadband ISPs – Sky Broadband, BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and EE – to block two more websites that facilitated copyright infringement (internet piracy) by helping to distribute video games for the Switch console.

The Guernsey Competition and Regulatory Authority (GCRA) has ruled that two of the English Channel island’s broadband, phone and mobile providers, JT and Sure, broke competition law by “attempting to illegally control” the provision of mobile networks in Guernsey, including the future introduction of 5G services.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a website advert for BT’s broadband ISP packages – seen during December 2020 – after they “misleadingly” presented their “Stay Fast Guarantee” on packages as a guaranteed minimum speed for the package, when that was not actually the case.
