The UK telecommunications regulator, Ofcom, has reportedly taken radical action to curb the plague of scam calls, which it is attempting to achieve by “ordering” major phone operators to automatically block any “suspicious” Voice-over-Internet (VoIP) calls that come from abroad if they pretend to come from numbers in the UK.

Some of Virgin Media’s (VMO2) UK ultrafast broadband ISP customers, specifically those who don’t already take their Pay TV service, are once again being invited to take their long-awaited TV streaming (IPTV) product – simply called ‘Stream’ – and it will come “at no extra cost“. But this time there’s no mention of a trial.

Worcestershire-based wireless and full fibre broadband ISP Airband has today secured a significant £100m investment boost (debt financing) to help accelerate their rollout of a new ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which will now aim to cover 600,000 UK premises by the end of 2025.

Network builder FullFibre Limited has today named the next batch of 19 towns in England to benefit from their rollout of a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which recently hit a build rate of 15,000 UK premises per month and aims to cover “at least” 500,000 premises by 2025.

The Reading Borough Councillor for Transport, Tony Page, has warned CityFibre that the local traffic disruption being caused by their rollout of a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the town is so bad that, if it doesn’t improve, they may “seek to remove” the company’s contractor Instalcom.

The County Councils Network (CCN), which is a cross-party special interest group of the Local Government Association (LGA) – representing 36 of England’s councils, has published a new report that warns of a growing divide in “gigabit-capable broadband” (1Gbps) coverage between urban cities and the “rural shires“.

Internet provider Plusnet has quietly introduced a new broadband router called the ‘Hub Two‘, which may be familiar to some as it looks to be a re-brand of parent operator BT’s SmartHub 2 (SH2) device, which was originally shipped in 2018 (here) to support a new range of G.fast and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based packages.

The Broadband Delivery UK team have today launched a second batch of Open Market Reviews (OMR) for additional parts of England covered by Phase 2 of the Government’s new £5bn Project Gigabit broadband roll-out. This aims to identify any existing or planned commercial coverage by gigabit ISP networks.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has estimated that 44.6 million UK people may have received scam calls and text messages during the past three months (summer period). But worryingly, around 2% of those who received such a message or call (roughly a million people) reported following the scammers’ instructions.
