Never underestimate the power of vermin with a taste for the UK’s telecoms cables. Some 1,800 of Openreach’s (BT) broadband and phone customers in North Devon (England) were cut off from their ISPs this week after rodents managed to chomp their way through one of the operator’s key cables.

UK ISP BT has today confirmed they will appeal the preliminary ruling by the Competition Appeals Tribunal (CAT), which last month rejected the operator’s attempts to stop a £600m class action claim against the broadband and phone operator – this related to the alleged overcharging of over 2 million landline-only customers.

Openreach (BT) has published the Tranche 6 batch of 79 UK exchange areas where they plan to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will occur once over 75% of premises in an area can get their “ultrafast broadband” (FTTP, G.fast) network.

Technology giant Samsung has today revealed that UK mobile operator O2 (VMO2) will shortly become one of the first providers in the country to conduct a commercial trial of their latest 5G Massive MIMO radios, as well as 4G radios, over both low-band and mid-band spectrum frequencies. The new kit will also be OpenRAN compliant.

Rural UK ISP Voneus, which is supported by Macquarie Capital, have begun upgrading their first village in Bedfordshire – Dunton – to their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which will replace their existing Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service in the area.

UK ISP Virgin Media Business (VMO2) has secured a major new state aid supported contract from the West Berkshire Council (WBC) in England, which will see them deploy a new “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network to connect more than 80 public sites (schools, GPs and public libraries etc.) by March 2022.

Mobile operator Vodafone will this month start offering Eco-SIM cards in their half-sized holders to customers across all 12 of their UK and European markets (plus Egypt, Turkey and South Africa), which are made from recycled plastic and will be “progressively replacing” SIM cards that are currently made from new plastic.

Some customers on Virgin Media’s UK (VMO2) ultrafast broadband packages appear to have been given a surprise this week after they were offered the chance to upgrade their older DOCSIS routers to a Hub 5 “at no extra cost“, which is a previously unknown model that supports WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and WPA3 encryption.

In an unsurprising move, Ordnance Survey (OS) has confirmed that they’re working with Atkins to build the UK Government’s new National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), which is a digital map of underground pipes (water etc.) and cables (broadband, power etc.) that could help reduce accidental damage.

The incumbent broadband ISP and mobile network operator for the English Channel Island of Guernsey, Sure, has confirmed a major new £37.5m investment project to deploy a 1Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to more than 30,000 properties across the island by the end of 2026.
