Mobile operator Vodafone will this month start offering Eco-SIM cards in their half-sized holders to customers across all 12 of their UK and European markets (plus Egypt, Turkey and South Africa), which are made from recycled plastic and will be “progressively replacing” SIM cards that are currently made from new plastic.

Some customers on Virgin Media’s UK (VMO2) ultrafast broadband packages appear to have been given a surprise this week after they were offered the chance to upgrade their older DOCSIS routers to a Hub 5 “at no extra cost“, which is a previously unknown model that supports WiFi 6 (802.11ax) and WPA3 encryption.

ISP Cuckoo today claims to have become one of the first UK internet providers to launch a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home broadband package based off Openreach’s new “Equinox” discounts, which will see them offer a 1Gbps (gigabit) tier for just £54.99 per month on a 1-month minimum contract term.

In an unsurprising move, Ordnance Survey (OS) has confirmed that they’re working with Atkins to build the UK Government’s new National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), which is a digital map of underground pipes (water etc.) and cables (broadband, power etc.) that could help reduce accidental damage.

The incumbent broadband ISP and mobile network operator for the English Channel Island of Guernsey, Sure, has confirmed a major new £37.5m investment project to deploy a 1Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to more than 30,000 properties across the island by the end of 2026.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has this week updated their list of blocked websites (i.e. those where they’ve been told to do so by the UK High Court) to include a number of new sites that, following an injunction secured by the Motion Picture Association (MPA), were found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published the first H2 2021 results from their testing of 5G (mobile broadband) networks in the UK cities and towns of Coventry, Leeds and Bradford, Nottingham and Sheffield. Crowdsourced benchmarking firm Tutela has published their latest Q3 2021 study of mobile broadband (4G and 5G) performance across the United Kingdom, which found that EE “dominated the majority of the metrics tested,” but Three UK are challenging when looking at the latest ultrafast 5G services.
