Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published a new report that examines the mobile broadband download speeds and availability of 5G networks across EE, O2, Vodafone and Three UK in four recently tested cities during the first half of 2021 – Birmingham, Bristol, Coventry, and London.

Sky (Sky Broadband) will today reintroduce their £2m SME support scheme, which pledges to give 100 small UK businesses £20,000 worth of TV advertising across Sky Media’s channels and a free 12-month “superfast business broadband” and digital phone package via their new B2B ISP Sky Connect.

The Scottish Government‘s (SG) 4G Infill Programme (S4GI), which via WHP Telecoms aims to improve rural mobile voice and broadband coverage by building new mast sites (mostly tackling notspots across the Highlands and Islands), has been given a £3.75m boost to construct a further 12 masts.

Rural focused UK broadband ISP Gigaclear has today announced that they intend to deploy their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across 4,300 premises in Ascot, and a further 4,400 properties in the village of Sunninghill (Berkshire). But they’ll need to fend off altnet rivals Zzoomm, and possibly also Trooli.

Broadband ISP BT UK has this afternoon informed us that their BTSport TV (IPTV) video streaming app has launched a beta of their “timeline” feature for large screens. On top of that their app has now also become available via Netgem’s HD and 4K set-top-boxes, which are often sold by rival broadband providers.

CityFibre has reached a new blanket wayleave (legal land / property access) agreement with the New Gorbals Housing Association, which will enable their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to be extended across 4,500 social housing properties on the south side of Glasgow in Scotland.

Mobile operators such as O2, Vodafone, Deutsche Telekom, Orange and Telia have today joined forces to launch a new pan-industry “Eco-Rating labelling scheme,” which aims to help customers identify and compare the most sustainable mobile phones and encourage suppliers to reduce the environmental impact of their devices.

UK ISP Country Connect, which started life back in 2016 by offering a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband network to remote rural communities in South Wales, has over the past few months begun building out their own gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network and is about to start connecting their first customers.

Contract-free UK mobile operator VOXI, a sibling of Vodafone UK, has today extended their “Endless Video” pass (i.e. giving unlimited data on 4G and 5G mobile broadband to certain video streaming services) to include support for the popular TikTok internet video streaming service.

OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK Government and aims to deploy a global network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for ultrafast low-latency broadband provision, is to lead a group of UK space tech companies in the development of a £32m experimental beam-hopping Satellite called ‘Joey-Sat‘.

Broadband builder CityFibre is reportedly said to be considering an expansion of their existing rollout plan, which currently aims to cover 8 million UK premises with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ISP network. But this could be expanded to 10 million, provided they can secure the necessary fund and contracts.

Openreach (BT) has moved into the trial phase for a change that, when adopted by UK broadband ISPs, could potentially help reduce the number of missed engineering appointments by improving the level of contact made between the network operator and end-users (consumers etc.) on certain provision and repair journeys.

UK ISP G.Network, which is investing £1bn to build a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network for homes and businesses in London (here), has announced that £105m of their funding will go toward a rollout for 100,000 premises across the borough of Wandsworth (c.230 miles of optical fibre cable).

Full fibre UK network builder Netomnia, which plans to make their 10Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network available to 1 million UK premises by 2024 (here), appears to have added a number of new rollout locations to their website over the past month or so.

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has this week confirmed that their new CityFibre and Openreach based ‘Future Fibre‘ packages, which offer average top speeds of up to 506Mbps via Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology, have now become available to homes in both Bournemouth (Dorset) and Doncaster (South Yorkshire).

Broadband ISP BT UK has informed us that their BTSport TV streaming service will make the 2021 UEFA Europa League and UEFA Champions League football finals “available for everyone in the UK to watch for free,” including via their YouTube channel if you’d rather not install the app.

Hull-based UK broadband ISP KCOM, which was gobbled up by Macquarie Infrastructure for £627m in 2019 (here), appears to have sold their off-net Eclipse Internet base to the Global 4 Group for an undisclosed sum. By the looks of it the provider will now make a return under the Eclipse Broadband name.
