At present Vodafone UK already sell ultrafast and gigabit speed broadband services to homes via CityFibre’s new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, but they’ve today announced that their partnership is being extended to harness CF’s Ethernet infrastructure too (i.e. more leased line style options for businesses).

BT has announced that they’ve begun trials of a new type of hollow core optical fibre cable at their BT Labs R&D facility in Adastral Park (Ipswich), which could in theory be more resistant to damage, while also delivering better performance (e.g. latency) for future broadband ISP and mobile connectivity services.

Following last month’s approval by the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and the full completion of its £31bn merger, a “new” UK company called Virgin Media O2 (VMO2) was officially launched today that has combined the fixed line broadband, phone, TV and mobile network businesses from both operators.

Homes in Abergavenny, Rhoose, Llantwit Major and Haverfordwest will be some of the first to benefit from UK ISP Spectrum Internet‘s £200m project to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in South Wales, which aims to cover 150,000 premises by late 2025. The provider has also rebranded itself to Ogi.

Openreach (BT) has today announced that, as a result of the BT Group raising their rollout target for 1Gbps+ Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, they now expect to reach 6.2 million UK premises across rural villages and market towns (up from the previous target of 3.2m) by December 2026.

London broadband ISP CommunityFibre, which is currently building a 3Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover a good chunk of the UK’s capital city, has launched a new “COVID-19 recovery” package that will give those on “welfare benefits” an unlimited 10Mbps (symmetric) connection at just £10 per month for 12-months.

UK ISP Giganet (M12 Solutions) has today announced that their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service on CityFibre’s network is being expanded to add another 22 cities and towns, which will bring their total coverage of that platform to 27. The operator has also added some new locations to their own fibre build.

O2 has revealed that they’re expecting a 4G and 5G “surge in mobile data [broadband] traffic along the UK’s main motorways this bank holiday,” with 77% of survey respondents saying they’ll rely on mobile devices to keep passengers entertained. Over a third of cars on the roads will also have over 3 mobile devices at any time.
