The UK government has today appeared to finalise their plans for turning Ofcom into a regulator of internet content via a new legal “duty of care“, which will hand them new powers to force websites (e.g. Facebook) into removing “harmful” content (e.g. terrorism, child abuse, self-harm and suicide imagery etc.).

After a long delay the Scottish Government (SG) and BT (Openreach) have finally signed a rollout contract for LOT 1 (North Scotland and the Highlands) of the £579 million Reaching 100% (R100) project, which will see “superfast broadband” speeds of 30Mbps+ reaching many more rural premises (mostly via gigabit FTTP).

Broadband and mobile giant BT has today announced that they will lead a new Government backed consortium as part of ‘Project XCelerate‘, which seeks to establish the UK’s first commercial drone corridor in open and unrestricted airspace (i.e. enabling automated drones and manned aviation to safely co-exist).

The North Wales Economic Ambition Board (NWEAB) has said that they’re making “major progress” on the £8m project to deploy a new gigabit speed Dark Fibre network in North Wales, which aims to connect 350 public sector sites across Denbighshire, Anglesey, Conwy, Gwynedd, Flintshire and Wrexham.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today singled out internet provider Plusnet for failing to introduce a key part of their new Broadband Speed Code of Practice before the deadline, which among other things requires supporting ISPs to provide customers with live sync speeds for certain lines or premises served by Openreach.

UK ISP G.Network has today secured a major fund raise from USS and Cube Infrastructure Managers, which will enable them to invest £1 billion to help deploy their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across 1.4 million premises in London (12 boroughs) over the next 5 years.

In a rare event it appears as if many of Google’s most popular internet services, such as YouTube, Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Play Store (Android) and Photos, have today suffered a major global outage. Many of the related websites are currently presenting with internal server errors (500).

SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) has just connected the first 22 of 190 public sector sites (hospitals, council buildings, education sites etc.) in Aberdeenshire (Scotland) to their new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre network, which is being funded by £10.5 million from the UK Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) programme.

Some 4,700 additional premises in the residential area of Kensal Green, which sits within the London boroughs of Brent and Kensington and Chelsea, have just become the latest location to benefit from the expansion of Virgin Media UK’s new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network.

It’s been a long time coming but Sky UK (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has today confirmed that customers of their Sky Q Pay TV platform can now access Amazon’s Prime Video app on their set-top-boxes. At the same time Sky’s sibling NOW TV streaming service will become available on selected Amazon Fire TV devices.

The move aims to assist with home learning, courtesy of the Inclusive Broadband Connected Communities project.

The UK division of civil engineering firm Lite Access Technologies, which specialises in deploying fibre optic (e.g. FTTP) broadband infrastructure (they’ve won contracts with Cityfibre, Gigaclear etc.), has filed a notice of intent to appoint an administrator after they suffered “challenges” related to their “ongoing builds” and COVID-19.

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband helped to push internet traffic up to a new peak of 18.29Tbps (Terabits per second) last Sunday 6th December 2020, which is up sharply from the previous peak of 16.6Tbps recorded only last month (here). Sky said their network coped well with this surge.

Shell Energy has informed “all customers” who signed up before 2nd September 2020 that, from 11th January 2021, some of them will face a price hike on their home broadband and call services. The move is expected to hit 112,000 customers, although around 42,000 on copper cables will receive a free upgrade to “fibre“.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today fined BT (Openreach) £6.3m after they were found to have “failed to meet regulatory obligations” during a tender for the recent £50m Northern Ireland Public Sector Shared Network contract in 2017/18. The decision follows a complaint made by rival company Eir.

Cardiff-based UK ISP Spectrum Internet has appointed a new CEO, Ben Allwright, to help oversee the provider’s planned £200m deployment of a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network (here), which aims to cover 150,000 homes and businesses across South Wales by late 2025.

Hampshire-based UK ISP Giganet, which offers Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages to homes via both the Openreach and Cityfibre networks, appears to have expanded their relationship with the latter to include coverage in Portsmouth, Swindon, Reading, Plymouth, Crawley and Horsham.
