The National Infrastructure Commission for Wales (NICW) has published a report that calls on the Welsh Government to “urgently establish” a Barrier Busting Taskforce to aid investment in broadband, but they also warn that “too much attention” has been paid to FTTP and “not enough” on improving Mobile Broadband (e.g. 5G).

The Perth & Kinross Council in Scotland has awarded SSE Enterprise Telecoms (SSEET) the £2m contract to deploy a new 19km long gigabit-capable “full fibre” network in the area, which will help to “boost economic activity” and connect 31 locations (public sector sites) across the city region.

ISP BT has voluntarily proposed to Ofcom that the protection it handed to UK consumers who take their landline-only phone service in 2018 (i.e. lines without broadband), which among other things cut the monthly rental from £18.99 to £11.99, should be continued for a further 5 years. We can’t see that being rejected.

Mobile operator EE has today announced that they’ve partnered with the Scottish Government (SG) to help deliver their £25m 4G Infill Programme, which aims to improve rural mobile voice and broadband coverage (mostly notspots across the Highlands and Islands) by building new masts for UK mobile operators to use.

Fibre optic supplier DZS appears have become one of the success stories in the post-Huawei era. The company has recently agreed new supply deals with a number of UK broadband ISPs, including KCOM and Grain Connect, which will help the providers to rollout their 1Gbps+ Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks.

After a long wait Cityfibre has finally confirmed that they will begin the £75m rollout of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network in the West Yorkshire city of Bradford in Spring 2021. The city was first included into their plan two years ago, but until now not much has happened.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which specialises in building 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks for large residential (MDU) or office buildings, has today confirmed a new agreement that will see them connect a “large proportion” of homes for L&Q, which is the largest housing association in London.

UK ISP Wessex Internet has today kicked off their side of the 5G RuralDorset (5GRD) project, which will use a mix of 5G technology and their existing fibre optic infrastructure to help bring data connectivity to remote rural farms. All of this will support the use of new sensors, drones and other so-called Internet of Things (IoT) solutions.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has today announced that they’ve completed a successful pilot of Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) tech from Vilicom, which unlike other trials was this time used to extend indoor 4G and 5G mobile coverage in order to tackle signal blackspots.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK are set to make a bunch of big changes to their ‘Pay As You Go 1’ tariff from 12th January 2021, which depending upon how you use the service could result in significantly higher charges being applied to customers. The cost of some non-standard calls will also be hiked.

The Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has today announced that their £146m “fibre broadband” roll-out contract with Openreach (BT) is “making its final connections“. The project has helped to deliver 6,500km of new fibre optic cable to improve broadband across 290 rural communities (benefiting over 193,000 extra premises).

A report claims that UK ISP and energy provider Shell Energy has now emerged as the preferred bidder for the Post Office’s telecoms division, which specially relates to its base of around 500,000 broadband and phone customers that is currently said to be valued at c.£100 million.

Telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has published the results of a new study, which examined how 4G and 5G based mobile broadband speeds compare across the United Kingdom and between different operators. Overall EE appeared to deliver the best speed, but Vodafone or Three UK are close behind.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has reported yet another new internet data traffic record of 7.23Tbps (Terabits per second), which was set yesterday evening at 8:30pm. This is enough to beat their previous record of 6.94Tbps (here), which was set on 14th November 2020 when various popular video game updates were released.

Broadband ISP Quickline (part of Bigblu) has today won a fourth state aid supported UK rural broadband delivery contract, which is worth £14.5m and will see them extend their “fibre-backed fixed wireless” network to bring “superfast, ultrafast and in some cases gigabit speed broadband” to a further 15,830 premises in North Yorkshire.
