Ofcom Propose Tweaks and Dark Fibre for KCOM in Hull UK

After a bit of a COVID-19 delay. Ofcom has today opened a review of regulation on KCOM’s network in the Hull (East Yorkshire) area, which last year completed the roll-out of a new gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service across their entire network and is now expanding beyond that footprint.

South Korean tech giant Samsung has published a new White Paper that sets out its aspiration for a future 6th generation (6G) of mobile broadband technology, which among other things targets internet data speeds of 1Tbps (Terabits per second) and latency times of just 100 microseconds. Fixed Broadband Growth Slows as Global Subscribers Top 1.13bn

New research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by just 1.25% (13.9 million) in Q1 2020 to total 1.13 billion, but the main impact from COVID-19 won’t be understood until Q2 and Q3. Meanwhile almost every connection technology saw growth, except copper (ADSL etc.) lines that fell -10.3% year-on-year.

Three UK Targets Delayed eSIM Support for September 2020

Mobile operator Three UK still appears to be slowly dragging its feet over the proposed addition of eSIM support to their 4G and 5G network, which is despite last December pledging to launch customer trials “within the next few months.” We’re still waiting, but it may now launch around the start of autumn.

The UK Government has today confirmed a dramatic U-turn, which means that new core and non-core 5G kit from Chinese tech giant Huawei will be banned from use in mobile networks from 31st December 2020. But existing kit will get until 2027 for removal and a decision on FTTP broadband ISPs will come later.

ISP BT Hits UK Landline Customers with Call Plan Price Hike UPDATED

The North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA), which represents Newcastle, North Tyneside (Tyne and Wear) and Northumberland, has announced that BT have secured the contract to deploy a new gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network to help connect 271 public sector sites (council offices, libraries, NHS etc.).

Street works to roll-out a new “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband ISP network have just begun in the West Midland’s city of Wolverhampton. The deployment is being funded by an investment of £50m from Cityfibre, which usually aims to cover around 85%+ of premises in the areas they target.

4,000 Homes in Warsop Get Virgin Media UK’s FTTP Broadband

Leicestershire UK Get Extra Broadband Cash as Contract Retendered

Backdoor Access Found in CDATA’s Chinese FTTH Broadband Kit

Chinese firm CDATA, which makes networking kit for FTTH and Hybrid Fibre Coax based broadband ISPs (often sold re-branded as OptiLink, V-SOL CN, BLIY etc.), is facing a serious problem after security researchers found 7 vulnerabilities in OLT kit including backdoor accounts that grant access to a hidden Telnet admin.
